I'd cash in now, damage limitation, let someone else take on the ego and invest the money and waged in a proper 15 to 20 goals a season striker. Fletcher when fit is twice the player anyway.

He isn't worth the alleged £26k a week now never mind doubling it.

SUNDERLAND still hope to persuade Connor Wickham to commit to a new contract on Wearside after failing to reach an agreement so far over new terms.

The Black Cats are keen to have his long term future sorted after entering the final year of his existing deal at the Stadium of Light.

That could mean agreeing to sell him before the end of August or risk losing him on the cheap next summer when it could come down to a tribunal as he will become a free agent.

And it emerged last night that Wickham has so far been unable to agree to a new contract - increasing the uncertainty surrounding his future. Sunderland, however, have not given up on the situation.

The England Under-21 international has caught the eye of other Premier League clubs after a fine end to last season, which earned him the player of the month award for April when he scored five goals to help keep Sunderland in the top-flight.

Southampton and Aston Villa have been strongly linked with the striker this summer, which is a huge turnaround for a young man who looked destined for a Football League move in March.

After spending time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, he got his confidence back having struggled to convince a number of Sunderland managers he deserved a chance to lead the line.

In the end Gustavo Poyet gambled on playing him front because injuries and poor form from Jozy Altidore, Steven Fletcher and Ignacio Scocco left him with little choice.

Now Wickham, showing signs of the player who burst on to the scene at Ipswich before his £8.1m move to Sunderland in 2011, is biding his time and appears to be keeping his options open.

Sunderland are keen to add another striker rather than lose Wickham, particularly as Scocco looks certain to be returning to Argentina to join former club Newells Old Boys.

There are claims in Argentina that Newells have agreed around £2.3m to buy Scocco, after Sunderland had rejected the bid of £1.75m which would have left them owning 50 per cent of the player.

Sunderland are keen to bring in as close to the £3.2m paid to Brazilian club Internacional in January and the latest offer is likely to see something happen. Scocco is already understood to have agreed personal terms.

Poyet is desperate to find at least a couple of new strikers before the start of the season and Arsenal’s South Korean Park Chu-Young is a realistic contender to arrive.

Park has spent the last three years at Arsenal following a move from Monaco but has made just one appearance for the Gunners. He has been on loan at Celta Vigo and Watford during that time.

The 29-year-old, who has 65 caps for his country and was in the World Cup squad along with Ki Sung-Yueng, would represent a cheap option for Sunderland, who have also made an £8m bid for Fabio Borini.

I'd want to see him play a lot more than a handful of games before making a definite decision.

I don't see that many '15 to 20 goals a season strikers' waiting to be snapped up.

There's a contract negotiation going on, just like at other clubs, and cool heads are needed.

If Poyet believes he should be kept I'll go with that.

The club will have him sold if this is true - won't let his contract run down and lose him for next to nothing next summer.

Need to start signing some decent players soon.

Well it's just another player saying 'give me the money'.

Poor lad is only supposed to be on 26k a week, how is he meant to live on that amount?

I think this is a non-story - it's a case of we are negotiating and he has turned down our first offer - bit like bidding to buy a house - go in £10k below asking price and then 5k and then 2k and then on the money and you get your house. Just a bit of a bidding process really. I think they should give him about £35k and make it up to the £42.5k he wants with add on's (said this on the other thread as well!).

He's certainly worth more per week than Altidore so far

We could always sell him and buy a goal scorer instead.

This elusive term of a "15-20 goal striker"

    1 Luis Suárez 31 Liverpool
    2 Daniel Sturridge 21 Liverpool
3 Yaya Touré 20 Manchester City
4 Wayne Rooney 17 Manchester United
4 Sergio Agüero 17 Manchester City
    6 Olivier Giroud 16 Arsenal
6 Edin Dzeko 16 Manchester City
6 Wilfried Bony 16 Swansea City
    9 Jay Rodriguez 15 Southampton
    9 Romelu Lukaku 15 Everton

They are all of the 15-20 goal players from last season - I'd say, barring Bony and Rodriguez, they're all on £100k per week plus and valued at over £25m each (including Bony and Rodriguez). Connor looked every bit a PL player at the end of last season - he's 21 and he's got an ego - we all had surely? I'd pay him good money to stay as he is a good player with the potential to be a great player. Has all the right attributes and, if Poyet can get him playing and focussed, then we have a very good young player on our hands who will make us money in a few years

Without being daft, the difference between Wickham and 'another striker' is that he's actually here.

He knows the club & players and he's played for a manager who's got the best out of him.

We could give up on him and end up with another highly paid lump like Graham.

It makes financial sense to give him a better contract, we can always sell him in the future ....... no need to panic is there?

Allowing a future England centre forward to leave, for the sake of a few quid, could haunt us for decades.

Its a negotiation and unfortunately he holds all the cards. IMO the club should play hard ball and negotiate as much as possible. The only card we hold is we could stick him in the reserves for 12 months so he can't showcase his talent and then when he does go free next summer he wont get the massive wages he wants because everyone will have forgotten about him.

Essentially replacing him will cost 10m+. Young English striker with EPL experience?? Save 10m and pay him the wages.

To be honest mate, he saved the club tens of millions by saving us from relegation ........ he deserves a pay rise.

If we, the supporters, and Poyet expect him to be our main Premier League striker I'm afraid we have to pay him the going rate.

If he chooses to spend some of that on a few drinks on his summer holiday that's none of my business tbh.
