I like Wanyama, but there is a reason why he will never cut it at the very top level imo. He is too one dimensional. Put him as a holding midfielder in a side where his only job is to win the ball back, there aren't many better around. Throw in him having to help tick over play and help anchor some attacking intent from the team and he falls down. The top teams would rather have a DM who is good at winning the ball back and good at distributing the ball/keeping attacks alive by being a reliable player on the ball and switching play from deep etc, than have someone who is great at one of the things but terrible at the other. Schneiderlin falls into that category perfectly, Wanyama doesn't.
I'll be disappointed with Morgan if he goes to Spurs. He is better than that. Go and play for a Chpions league team if you have to go. At worst join United, but Spuds? No, you are so much better than that.
If we get the right price for him then sell him, just don't see the point in keeping a player who doesn't want to be with us anymore. The one important thing I learnt this summer is that Southampton football club is what counts here not individual players. A team game where everyone is replaceable and I'd rather have players who really do want to play for this club even if it's only for a few seasons.
I disagree with the first part of your post. If a team needs that type of player (holding and winning the ball back), then as you said he's perfect. Some top teams need that so therefore he could cut it at the top. There maybe players that can do that and more, but you can't say that means he would t cut it at the top. It's like saying Klose only scores goals and to cut it at the top you need a striker to do more than that. If a manager plays him and wants more, then the manager hasn't done his job right.
Ok, let me re-phrase it. A top team wouldn't want Wanyama in the side because he is too one dimensional. Yes he can cut it at the top level as a ball winning midfielder (as he proved for Celtic in the CL) but I think that a team like Arsenal (for example) would rather have Arteta as the deeper midfielder than Wanyama, despite Wanyama being far better at the defensive side of the game. I agree with FLT about how he could suit in certain scenarios but unless he improves his ability on the ball (which he could easily do seeing as he is only what 22?) I don't think a big team would come in for him unless he was going very cheaply. Where as Morgan is comfortable on the ball and is also very good defensively, so would be the much more sought after player.
No Problem. Even though my wife is Black and Foreign (as well as stupid) I don't understand why half the things that people say is offensive and neither does she. And even though I have Aspergers as does my eldest son (so we are Autistic) I don't get why a lot of what people say is offensive to us either. I guess I have thick skin (or am a bit slow up there) or naive ) I'm a bit old school and thick skinned I suppose. I don't get a lot of things that upset people.
Wanyama has definitely shown his worth. He just sits there and breaks up play, doesn't need to do more then that when paying a double pivot if the other player is more creative. I could say Morgan is limited when compared to Cabaye because Cabaye offers far more going forward and delivers a great dead ball as well as being perfectly decent defensively but there are few players in the world like Cabaye. Morgan is replaceable - Clasie, if attainable, will do.
Many people nowadays have a default setting of 'offended' which gets further stoked by social media/twitter etc. I was reading today about how utterly offended people were that a chain had taken over an old, disused job centre in London and turned it into a pub called "Job Centre" - lots of people basically being offended on behalf of other people (who may or may not have been offended themselves, who knows). I mean it's not a great name and not half as clever as it thinks, but whatever happened to our ability to choose not to be offended? Or to laugh at (or with) something?
I'd say ditch the double pivot. It does often see Wanyama assuming roles he's not good at, and I'd rather we sat him in front of the CBs and took the "defend with three, attack with seven" mentality.
Yeah exactly, cork pretty much does Morgans job when Morgan doesn't play so he'll be fine. I can't think of many players who are better at winning the ball than Wanyama in the prem, we've got an anchorman for years to come in victor.
Agree. Jordy Classie idolised Ronald at Feyernord and was in tears when he left. I think getting him is achievable.
