I don't like the idea of naming the whole ground after him but the petition is only to name one stand. We could name the Kingsland or Itchen after him, which I think is a good idea. Naming the stands after legends of the club is something I quite like, Cortese seemed to want to ignore our history as he didn't believe in celebrating what he deemed as mediocrity. That was his choice when he was running things but I think Katherina wants to embrace our history a little more, hence the return to stripes etc.
I was going to post this. Do people never read anything properly? It says the St Mary's Stand not the stadium. Naming the Stadium isn't suggested at all. Naming stands in memory of people is a nice way of remembering people. One of Lincoln's stands was renamed 'The Stacey West Stand' in memory of the 2 Lincoln fans that died in the Bradford Fire disaster. In a similar way Markus saved the club from extinction and so is a very valid person for this club to remember forever. As long as we don't end up honouring every player that does well for us for a few years with something then it maintains the dignity of naming things and doesn't tie anyone to the club as suggested. Even a new owner should that happen at some point down the line would not object to a stand being named after a former owner that saved the club. I think it is a good idea.
The petition is only asking for a stand to be named after Markus which I dont see a problem with, while the're at it why not also rename stands for MLT & Ted Bates?
Pretty much agree with this. I like a stadium to show it's ties with the area or city it's in and St Mary's fits in well with this and the club's history. The re-naming of grounds usually ignores this and quite often a source of ridicule when involving a sponsor. Thank goodness Friends Provident was dropped from St Mary's. Oldham's ground, Boundary Park is now known as SportsDirect.com park for Christ's sake.
Modesty and low profile is why we loved Markus (and Katherina is growing on me in the same way). Leave it be.
No it wasn't , it was Cortese's .Markus agreed and paid shed loads of money , but the whole saint's vision was ( fortunately or unfortunately ) Cortese's .......
In complete agreement. Markus was 'the money' but NC had the vision, drive and intelligence to put the plan together. It's what those in the club recognised and it's why they are looking to get out. Seeing as we are a maritime city to use the nautical analogy; The ship isn't sinking yet - but there is no captain at the helm and we can only hope that Ron can get this ship back under control before we founder on some rocks. At present, the board (aka those on the bridge) have not got a clue.
