Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes his players must accept a degree of suffering during pre-season in order to be in the best possible shape when the campaign proper kicks off.

The Black Cats fought against relegation from the Premier League for the majority of last season, only to put together an inspired run at the business end of the campaign to secure their status for 2014/15.

Poyet wants his men to be on the ball from the first whistle of the new campaign to avoid similar struggles and is not sparing the players when it comes to pre-season.

"People and players need to realise that pre-season is hard and you need to suffer a little bit", Poyet told his club's site, after the first training session of the summer.

"The more you suffer, the less you will suffer during the season.

"If you get through pre-season in the right way, you will be ready."

New Sunderland signings Billy Jones, Jordi Gomez and Costel Pantillimon all joined up with their new team-mates for training today.

Good. One thing that PDC cant be criticised is for his fitness practices. Seemed to pay dividends towards the end of the season, where we had in previous years suffered badly for injuries, less so last year.

The players moaned about that pre season after he was sacked, too much fitness, not enough ball work they said. I'm with you. Good.

Complained about fitness work? Shocker. Ball work is quite sedate.

If they need that much practice with balls, they shouldn't be Prem players. Not to say that it isn't important however

Think after last time, if JOS was to try it again with the players

I think Ellis would either tell them to shut up as theyre not getting away with it again

or the fans would seriously turn on the team

Gus strikes me as the type of gaffer you'd want to work for, a very likeable, genuine guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, pdc on the other hand was a bit ****ing mental to say the least

Exactly so. If there had been any rumblings of discontent it would have been evident before now.

But we did, banning condaments etc, remember fletcher being interviewed on football focus and being asked about such things, which he denied like at the time, players were tweeting stuff and leaking to the press

I was thinking about all the stuff in the press, discipline, fines, banning ketchup etc. You could see it building up. It was never out of the news.

First anybody knew of problems with PDC was following Palace away with his public comments regarding O'shea, the condiment **** didn't come out until after he was sacked, in fact prior to the Palace game everything from players was complimentary.
