In today's market what would a 25 year old Shearer be worth?

He would have murdered every team if he had gone to Real Madrid. No question.

Me too. The closest the modern game has come has been drogba. A proper shearer types would prolly give away to many fouls.
Probable. But would RM have even bought him? He never had the flair they like their players to have.

I disagree. My thinking is that the false nine is a by product of the lack of outstanding true number 9s like Shearer. The closest strikers out there like Falcao, Benzema, Higuain, Cavani have some but not all of a 25-year-old Shearer's attributes. Shearer had the ability to score audacious volleys with his technique of striking the ball, score penalties with ease, even scoring free kicks, hold the ball up on his own, beat a defender with power OR pace. It's no coincidence that Shearer was as close to a 25-goal per season striker as you can get, and that feat has not been seen much since.

I think the closest to him I would say is Lewandowski. We'll see how he does next season.

Ultimately, if any player could have a Shearer in their team, there's no reason not to use him, since he could essentially fit into any sort of game plan you have. It was like Papiss Cisse his first season for us, and more. We used Cisse because no matter what he was always going to give you that great goal threat. He has obviously fallen off a cliff since but the point remains. We won games just on our defence + Cisse's goals

They did have a certain Raul Gonzalez up front for them. Not interested in going into comparing them though.

I see your point but clubs do have the option to mould their young strikers how they want. If clubs wanted traditional number nine they'd develop them that way. I don't believe for a second the entire world has stopped producing talent with the ability to play the true number 9. Could Messi have been developed into a traditional number 9, of course. Suarez, yep. Could Shearer have been developed to be a false number 9? I think so, but he wasn't. Fact is football teams want more from their number 9 these days, footy has evolved as it alway does, forwards are being asked to do more at development age instead of limiting them. Things will change, the fashion will change, the game will change and the true number 9 will probably have it's day again, just not at the moment. I still think that sort of forward could flourish in the modern game, but clubs just don't want it.

Raul was Real Madrid through and through though. Real wouldn't spend that money being touted on a traditional English number 9.

If we are going down the route of not buying a Shearer in todays market then how much would Pedro be? For me one of the greatest footballers ever! Better than Bale et al.

Raul must have played against Beardsley at some point surely. Even if only for the national team.

I wouldn't say Benzema has flair. The guy is about as useful as a fly ridden turd.

If they signed him, they would have spent ludicrous money for Shearer
