I honestly would have hoped that he'd been fed a more realistic club goal of getting into Europe or the top 8.
To even consider CL football or top 4 is total fantasy on every level.
I hope this is just a bit of upbeat spin he's putting in things and doesn't actually believe it....

Newcastle United: Siem de Jong targets Champions League place

New signing Siem de Jong says Newcastle will be aiming for the top four in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League this season.

The 25-year-old Dutchman joined on a six-year contract for an undisclosed fee from Ajax, who he captained to four Eredivisie titles, on Tuesday.

“Number 10 is my favourite position. I hope I can play in that position but I even played as a striker at Ajax”

"I think we're aiming for fourth and trying to be in the Champions League," De Jong told BBC Newcastle.

"I think that is a nice goal, a tough goal, but one we're trying to aim for."

Switzerland-born De Jong made his international debut for the Netherlands in August 2010 and has won six senior caps, scoring two goals, but was not selected for the World Cup.

His brother Luuk, 23, was on loan at St James' Park from Borussia Monchengladbach for the second part of last season but the club struggled for form.

"For him it was a pity as it was quite a difficult time and he wasn't at his best but he said it was a really nice club, stadium and fans and a nice city to live," added De Jong.

"Of course my brother played here last season and so I talked to him about it.

De Jong scored three goals in two Champions League games against Manchester City during the 2013-14 season

"The club also followed me the last three or four years so for me it was quite a logical step."

During his time at the Amsterdam Arena, De Jong played alongside Premier League players Luis Suarez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, and he believes he is just as capable of adapting to the Premier League.

"It's good that a lot of ex-players that I played with had a good step to England and I hope I can do the same," he said.

"I think I'm a smart player who looks for space during the game; I can score goals and give assists and always work hard when we do and don't have the ball.

"Number 10 is my favourite position. I hope I can play in that position but I even played as a striker at Ajax a lot of times, but not a real striker but more like one that comes into the midfield sometimes."

Lets see where we are at the end of the window. For me no outgoings and bringing in cabella and lacazette would make us better than last season where we were only a few points away from CL before we sold cabaye. I don't really know what to expect but i would rather he said were playing for top 4 rather than us having a goal of top 10.

What would you have prefered ACS, aiming for mid table, avoiding relegation, I would rather have ambition than just here for the money and as Yank says wait till the end of the window and then start bitching.

I don't think it counts as bitching to note the unrealistic nature of a top 4 goal like <laugh>

If we're going for the impossible dream, why not premier league, fa cup and league cup treble?

If the lad has been told this is an ambitious club which will be challenging top 4, considering the masses of money being spent by other top 4 clubs, and those outside it (which include one Manchester United), then Ashley must be spending a f*** tonne this window, which would go against every sinew of logical reasoning anyone on earth could possess, even those who claim the world will end every tuesday.

His brother was here for 6 months: he knows what he signed on for. So he says he's aiming for the stars: it's nonsense but it's, to use what appears to be his favourite word, nice nonsense.

What does he know that we don't. Our current squad is 17th-10th position at best, however, he may have been given assurances on our transfer activity. ( I am hoping here )

Pardew must have been laying it on thick with the bull****. Even if Pards has lied to him, de Jong knows the real score. There isn't a chance in hell of us challenging for the top 4. Those days are long ****ing gone barring some miracle sheik intervention.

Assuming Debuchy, Sissoko and anyone else touted as departing all actually stay, we would need another 7 quality players to even think about being able to challenge the top four.

Plus an owner that would spend serious cash and a manager with talent.

All I ask is that people are realistic when they speak to the media.
No way are we gonna finish the top 4 in the next few years.
    Its a physical possibility.
We've been fed so much bull**** over the last few years that fanciful comments like this just make me f**king facepalm away.
We should be aiming for Europe at best and stop trying to believe otherwise.
    All goals should be SMART.

    Specific
    MeasureAble
    Realistic
    Timebound

Anything other is just setting expectation up to fail.

It's like me saying I have a chance with Karen Gillan and Gillian Anderson in a 3 way when everyone knows only Karen will take a second look at me :)

Whilst i think us finishing top 4 this season is more than unlikely it has to be remembered that even last season (not days long gone) we were on the edge of the top 4 when Cabaye left. Had he stayed till the end of the season, not unrealistic seeing he wanted world cup and ended up playing very little in France, and the club showed a little ambition with a sensible, modest but well chosen new signing or two in jan we definately could have done it despite the cash being thrown around by the big boys. Its also only a couple of seasons since we finished 5th, just missing top 4 on the last day of the season.
Yes we are all very downbeat for many justifiable reasons but lets keep it in perspective lads. Its getting very boring on here reading all the doom and gloom from "the loyalest supporters the world has ever had" and the lack of activity on this board reflects the boredom.
Lets criticise the signings and departures when the window closes not when its just opened.
Welcome to Siem by the way. Looks good.

Well said. I like Siem's delusions, lets hope we all have fun watching him trying to make them come true. Looking forward to pre-season much more now that we've signed him.

    We really are completely doomed.
Mr T and his magic hoop will once again be right.
We will sell all of our best players and get relegated.

Players always hope for the best. They always aim high. He won't be persuading Mike to spend CL money.

I don't blame de Jong for aiming for the stars. As we know from last season if you aim for 10th that's what you get. Better to go out there with the belief that you can beat anyone rather than be beaten before you start.
