So, we have Crawley away in the mickey mouse cup - another 1st round defeat i reckon. So, how serious should we be taking this cup? Especially as its so early in the season. Should we put our best team out? Should we experiment with formations? My personaly belief is that you should always play your best team that is available to you, injuries permitting.
I always view cup games as an opportunity to play some of the stronger fringe players to keep match sharp and/or introduce some youngsters to the first team. What I don't think should happen is changing the first 11 completely. It's a definite banana skin that we may well 'deliberately' trip over and though my beleif is that any win builds positive momentum and a winning mentality whether thats cup or league games I wouldnt be too concerned if it meant we kept our focus on a play-off push.
Would think it would be sensible to put out as many reserves as you can, there have been several teams over the years, who have gone on good cup runs, and their league form has suffered, like even getting relegated, you play your strongest team in a cup match, the team who you play in the league on Saturday might play a virtual reserve team for their midweek cup match, then they have a potential advantage, makes no sense. Forty six tough matches to be played in a long season, we won't have a big squad, also bear in mind, ourselves and Norwich have to travel further than the rest of the teams in the league, because of our geographical positions
A big banana skin I'd say is this one. I would however like to see us progress some way in it and play a majority first team and a few on the fringe. I'm all for winning everything so IMO lets go for it.
