Assuming Fonte is given a new contract, presumably him. But if he goes then Sammy the Saint will have to do
Between Cork and Davis...just think Davis has the edge on leadership (based solely on my opinion, no evidence whatsoever). I love Fonte, but think he needs to build rapport with his new partner (whoever that is). He became even better playing next to Lovren or perhaps from working under MP, so I trust him but it is very important he concentrates on building a relationship with the rest of the defence.
I'd go for JWP, with everybody else gone he's bound to become my new idol. But I voted for Cork, I like him the most at the moment.
Steve Davis. Captain of Northern Ireland and gives his heart and soul every time he plays. Our most under-rated player last season. For the future, JWP is the obvious choice.
Jack Cork. We can build him up, make him Captain, get him in the England squad and then he can bugger off to MK Dons claiming they are the remaining descendants of his Dad's 88 cup winning team (well, he wouldn't go to AFC Wimbledon, they're only league 2)
When l saw the question l knew what l wanted to respond with: only you got there first! Assuming we have someone left on the ground staff; they'll do l suppose...
I would have put 'if they are still here' after each option on the poll. I would then include Morgan on the list. if he is still here then it has to be him. Will Davis and Fonte be regular starters after we've spent our moolah?
Is Cork really going to be here? I say this because he has not been offered a new contract and, if there is a rift between players and the board, he probably won't sign one either. Also, Fonte has repeatedly been linked with moves and was ready to talk to the press about the anger Saints were feeling toward the board. So, as I can't trust either of them to be here, I vote Davis. He is the only player to come out with positive comments about SFC without saying anything damaging first.
It's not just about who leaves, it's also about who comes in. Not (necessarily) because a new signing might be captain material, but because a new signing might result in a Fonte or a Davis finding themselves on the bench quite a lot going forward. And you can't give the captaincy to someone who can't get in the team. Until we have a rough idea of what our starting XI looks like, it's difficult to make any sort of call.
Well considering everyone wants to leave us.., Id give it to Fonte As im sure we will have to give him a contract by default. Though hed be my choice if we kept Lovren/Schniederlin etc. Boruc Clyne Fonte (c) Maya Chambers Cork Wanyama JWP Davis(vc) Rodriguez Pelle.
Fonte/Cork/Davis NEED to be starting. They are our spine, and make us Solid. We build the team around them.
Based on our current squad, maybe. But what if Lovren stays, and we spend £15 million on a top new CB? I'd suggest then that Fonte doesn't NEED to be starting. Until the transfer window shuts, I simply can't pick a captain. Just like I can't pick a starting XI. Or a bench. Or make a prediction on where we might finish in the league.
