Great article. Best jouno by far. He wrote he did come to Hull to be interviewed for Uni, bought a record at the shop in Paragon St but went to Manchester Uni instead i think. That Brucey quote about chimney pots is from awhile ago but its a bloody brilliant quote. I wrote ages ago when City do their coaching kids courses in the 6 weeks holidays, it was 2 weeks at KC, one at Hornsea, Beverley, Bridlington and Sth Cave. how can single mum's with young kids or two parnet families on Longhill Bilton North Bransholme get to the KC. Sure some will but its not tangible is it. There should be coaching in the summer holidays at 4 venues in Hull, every week at a minimal cost.
Always a quality read in the Mail- just a few turds on here who parrot Ian Hislop that can't see it. Samuel has been writing supportive thought-provoking pro HCFC articles since the David Lloyd era.
It's a good article and he makes some very good points, but the headline is a bit misleading since Bruce backed Dyke's B-team proposals.
didn't Hull have the largest Sunday league structure at one time ? seem to remember this odd fact from somewhere
Its a a very good article, and I have nothing against good Mail journalism Stu - its just the paper and its editor and owner's politics I can't stand, and on that we'll continue to differ! On another note I just hope that Bruce gets the time (or sticks around) long enough to push the plans through. Its partly what Pulis did for Stoke whilst he was there and its really important.
There doesn't even need to be this initially. All the club need to do is place an article on their website to ask for volunteers to go out on a Saturday or Sunday morning watching local kids football games. Pick out a decent player for that team, report it back. An admin collates the information and those that are repeatedly mentioned (to stop Dad picking his son) get scouted. Players selected for City official age group gets those who nominated/scouted initially a couple of cup game tickets Or something equally as simple. There are a lot of people in Hull who would like to be the person who scouted the next Nicky Barmby or even the next Adam Boulder I would presume
This is the second thread that's mentioned no kids have played since 200 but Mike Edwards was with us until 2003 unless I'm missing something in the whole time line that's being mentioned! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Edwards_(footballer)
I raised this exact point like a year/year and half ago now and another poster, who I don't think posts here now, nor do I remember his name, told me I was "wrong" despite having first hand experiences in sending children from my school along, having being scouted, only to be dropped (sometimes for kids who simply weren't as good). I seem to remember that poster works/worked in the youth set up and that's why they defended it so much but the proof is here. We just haven't been producing players and I am glad to see Bruce is ordering this to be sorted. One simple fix could be for them to send somebody to the Hull Boy's 5-a-side tournaments organised by Barry Jackson each year. There's Year 6 (10-11 year olds), Year 5 (9-10) and Year 4 (8-9) versions of this and gives a great opportunity to see a majority of our Primary Schools best talent. Hull City do hold their own tournament once per year, which you may remember Victoria Dock representing us in from the Everton game in this year's event, but more could be ideally done. A couple of years ago, I was talking to somebody who's child used to go to my school. He was telling me that he been to a social gathering at some function with then-boss Phil Brown and he had managed to get his son a trial without even being seen to play. In all fairness, the parent's son was an OK player from my memory but it's a bit odd that's how easy it was to get a trial.
This quote came as a bit of a shock...."Change will happen because Hull will start next season’s Europa League campaign with a squad of 21, not 25, as UEFA insist four players must have been developed by the club. Nobody fits the bill beside fourth-choice goalkeeper Mark Oxley, who is now ineligible having spent last season on loan at Oldham Athletic." Must have been living in a cave 'cos I didn't know that! Great article as always from Mr. Samuel and I've always found him very interesting when appearing on Sunday supplement.
I've been down at the Hull Schools Rep Trials (formerly Hull Boys) this evening. Seems there's still alarming issues. Scouts already knew some children's names for example. In some cases, some children were "being greedy" and not passing the ball but were left to do so without anybody having a quick word. This meant probably a quarter of the children rarely got a pass of the ball, left stranded on wings and such. In other cases, scouts turned their back on the game they were supposed to be watching, to watch another game (despite there being 3 scouts for the 3 games going on, and the teams at some point being on each pitch). Some schools sent far too many children when the invite said "best players only" with some parents saying their child was there "for a laugh". The scouts had the job of reducing 60 children down to 15 (who would then have to go to further trials with Hull City kids next Wednesday), but it seemed to me (and many watching) that probably 13-14 of those places were already taken before a ball was kicked. Too much talent slipping the net.
I don't think Hull does too well in the eggy game either considering there are two clubs . And as a city is fairly major compared to the small towns like Leigh Cass Featherstone St Helens that always produce quality and quantity,
Do they still do these trials by having 11 v 11 games? That's a sure way of just selecting the big lads who can muscle out a smaller, perhaps more skilful lad. You get the feeling that Hull City would have overlooked a 10 year old Messi.
He would've been home grown yeah. We also had Will Atkinson, Jamie Devitt and Mark Cullen who broke through into the first team, albeit only for a short time.
Some things never change. I had a 'trial' in the early 50's at the Anlaby Road ground, where KC is now. I said I was a winger. I was given a shirt and sent out for an 11 x 11 on a full size pitch. It lasted 20 mins and I never touched the ball once. Nobody spoke to me and I just drifted away. They don't know what they missed!!
