Don't get all the fuss about Geoffrey Chaucer if i'm being completely honest. Obviously something wasn't right in the Derby but i would have been amazed if he won the Derby, even finished in the top 3 and ill be equally amazed if he gets anywhere near Australia today. 1/5 is probably about right for Australia today as i can't see Kingston Hill being any better on this ground than he was at Epsom. The rest purely aren't anywhere near good enough

I'd like to see Ponfeigh run a rice race in the Derby.

Beefy, the variants on “chip on your shoulder” come up all the time on here and I keep looking but I cannot find it. I am just dealing in the facts – if you supply half the runners every year, you have more chance of winning.

There are some statistics in the Racing Post about how Aidan O’Brien has monopolised the Irish Derby in recent years, so I will paraphrase them here for your benefit mentioning only his participants:

2006 – runners 3 – winner Dylan Thomas 9/2fav
2007 – runners 4 – winner Solder Of Fortune 5/1 (fav was Eagle Mountain 6/4)
2008 – runners 5 – winner Frozen Fire 16/1 (shortest price Alessandro Volta 7/1)
2009 – runners 6 – winner Fame And Glory 8/11fav
2010 – runners 5 – winner Cape Blanco 7/2
2011 – runners 4 – winner Treasure Beach 7/2
2012 – runners 2 – winner Camelot 1/5fav
2013 – runners 2 – did not win (fav was Ruler Of The World 4/5)

I think Australia will turn out to be one of those horses like Sea The Stars that never wins by half the track because he does just enough to win and he will do so today; and he may be very long odds on if Roger Varian pulls Kingston Hill because of the ground.

I cannot find a decent bet at any of today’s meetings, so I will be looking at Colombia to beat Uruguay in 90 minutes (get your teeth into the 11/10) and run that on to Holland tomorrow.

Could be a few come a cropper in the Assen Moto GP. They have not even started yet, but teams are all over the place on tyres. Wet or dry.

QM O'Brien clearly monopolises the Irish Derby but it's hardly the only race he does. And I don't just mean Irish flat races. As you can know full well he doesn't do a bad job in the Epsom version either, winning it the last 3 years and with placed horses pretty much every year. Therefore you could argue he dominates both, though one more dramatically than the other, and clearly the number he runs in them does help his 'stats'! I guess that's what happens when you're backed by Coolmore, their premier worldwide breeding programme and their endless pot of cash...

I do agree that more competition in Irish flat racing is clearly needed but the above factors are hard to contend with over the course of a season, even though O'Brien by all accounts isn't having a good one thus far.

I agree with your football bet, though I am not punting at the moment. I shall not jinx you, don't worry :)

Bluesky I see Australia is entered in the Juddmonte International. Hopefully he'll get a chance to show how 'great' he is in that or else we'll be waiting until the Irish Champion Stakes in September. I do hope he runs at York. I said prior to the Epsom Derby that I suspect they'll tread the Sea the Stars path to greatness with him and hopefully this will be the case!

Kingston Hill out, not much of a Derby now <laugh>

Obrien gets about 95% of the horses who are bred for the race so no surprise what it has become after the French abandoned.

Discussiontofollow 10/1

Although raised 3lb for being about 1L in 3rd on his last start (race has worked out well), I thought Discussiontofollow was not at home on Windsor's sharp track and I think he's got an outstanding chance to land this valuable sprint handicap today. Having shown good form for Geoff Harker on, Discussiontofollow joined Mike Murphy late last year and sauntered to victory in a Wolverhampton Maiden over 6f last November. Given a mark of 68, Discussiontofollow ran out a comfortable winner over that same C+D in December which saw him raised 8lb to a mark of 76. Discussiontofollow brought up his hat trick at Kempton in January with one of the most impressive performances you'll ever see over 6f as Shane Kelly didn't even need to breath on him to win by the cheekiest of necks. That day he beat Absolutely So into 2nd who is now rated 17lb higher and who was sent off a smashed favourite of the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and from that day I thought Discussiontofollow was a Pattern horse in the making. Raised 10lb for that victory, Discussiontofollow ran a fine race at Windsor when beaten a length into 3rd when I don't think he looked at ease at the track in a race that looks very strong with the 2nd, 4th (twice) and 5th all winning since which has seen Discussiontofollow raised 3lb to his current mark of 89. A first visitor oversees from the small Mike Murphy yard, his 4 year old has bagged a terrific draw in stall 21 and the quick ground likely frantic pace should suit this sprinter ideally. With only 6 starts to date, there undoubtedly looks a lot more to come and if getting a charmed run through the field I think he's going to take a lot of beating in this competitive and valuable prize.

Anyone know what happens to the €12500 on offer for 6th place in the Irish Derby today? Disastrous turn-out for a classic.
