Wigan have agreed a fee with Newcastle for defender James Tavernier, Sky Sports understands.

Wigan have made highly-rated full-back Tavernier one of their top targets this summer and they are hoping to fend off interest from several clubs to land the player.

Tavernier spent last season on loan at Rotherham and helped the club win promotion to the Championship.

Rotherham were keen to make Tavernier's move permanent, but Wigan are in pole position to land the 22-year-old.

Wigan boss Uwe Rosler is a big fan of the right-back and sees him as a key addition to his plans as he looks to mount another bid for promotion to the Premier League next season.

Tavernier, who has made 10 first-team appearances for Newcastle, is entering the final year of his contract at St James' Park and the club have decided to cash-in on him.

I don't think this is a bad move on our part, he never really looked up to the standard in the games I saw. On the flip side; it's ****ing awful that we're losing another player from our already depleted squad.

Bit disappointing for me. I had my doubts but the lad looked to have made reall progression last year. Down the divisions yes, but that is where a lot of youngsters make that first step. Interesting that someone like Rosler sees enough in him. Could be error but time will tell.

It's apparent the loans we've been making are part of a strategy to reduce playing staff to a minimum. I had thought it was to give players time to improve without the pressure to succeed immediately which they would have in the PL, but it looks like it's purely a shop window exercise. Interested as to why Bigi wasn't loaned out in this case.

The one positive to take from Tav leaving is that there's now no-one fit to replace Debuchy should he be considered for sale, so hopefully we can hang onto him for another year.

We've signed Debuchy's replacement. We've gone for experience, a lad called Ryan Taylor. Great free kicks allegedly.

Are you sure we need him, maybe we can loan him out then sell him for £300k...

Lacks ambition and clueless, this just sums up Newcastle United. Lad did very well for Rotherham and was clearly our best right back option when (if) Debuchy leaves us. So we are left with the possibility of Colback being our right back or Ryan Taylor.

Can't say that I'm bothered that he's moved on.
Never good enough for me from what I've saw of him.

Fair enough he did well in the 3rd tier of English football, but that's too far removed from the reality of the PL to think he could cut it as back up for Debuchy or his replacement.

Imagine having him and Dummett in the same defence as Willo and MYM.

    In complete agreement <ok>

The lad was utterly chronic from what I'd seen of him. Can't believe the article calls him "highly-rated" <laugh>
