Alfred N'Diaye looks set to start pre-season back at Sunderland next week after potential moves to Real Betis and Seville both fell through.

But that leaves the Senegal star in limbo - since Gus Poyet has already indicated the player is among several he considers surplus to requirements.

The Black Cats paid Turkish outfit Bursaspor £3.8m for N’Diaye in January 2013.

He made 16 appearances for the club, under Martin O’Neill then Paolo Di Canio.

But he was farmed out to another Turkish club - Eskisehirspor - for the first half of last season and spent its second half on loan at Betis.

The Spanish side were relegated from La Liga last month.

Yet while they remained keen to tailor their budget to retain the French-born midfielder’s services for the coming campaign, a summer transfer warchest of just 10 million Euros means they are unable to rebuild their squad AND meet Sunderland’s £3.2m asking price.

Whether N’Diaye - who represented France at various youth levels but Senegal in his sole senior international outing - would have been prepared to play outside the Spanish top flight is unknown.

Seville could have offered him La Liga and Europa League football next term, after finishing fifth in the table. But the Chronicle understands the Andalusian outfit - known colloquially as the ‘Bathtubs’ - now have their sights set on two alternative, African-based targets in the N’Diaye mould.

That appears to suggest the 24-year-old will report for pre-season training at the Academy of Light next week.

He has two years left on his current contract, but is understood to have little future on Wearside.

Would love N'Diaye to stay, looked a good player in a poor team under MON

Think he is levels above Bridcutt and could fit into Colbacks role quite well

I'd rather have him than Bridcutt.

I think Bridcutt was a poor signing, and I hope he's not in the starting line up next season.

He'd slot right into colbacks slot (ooo er) if he worked on his shooting he could be a real box to box midfielder. Hed give us much needed presence in a midfield full of midgets.

I hope gus gives him a shot.

Parker are you turning into Frankie Howard ? lol

I think he is a player worth keeping I thought he was looking a bit of a beast in his last few games for us so I just wonder if something has gone on behind the scenes?

Think we'll punt him out on loan again to get his wages off the books.

It is a shame that in this current inflated transfer market, we cant convert some of these fringe players into first teamers, one or two have looked like they have what it takes, suggesting that it is as much to do with attitudes, rather than ability.

He's a poor passer of the ball and lacks composure, he's not suited to us. He's a big powerful, box to box midfielder who'd suit a counter attacking philosophy where he's running into space. Decent enough player but if we could move him on and replace him with a player with the attributes that suit our system then surely that's better.

I'm sure there's a reason Poyet won't consider him and lets not forget the lad doesn't want to play for us unless we guarantee him games. He's nowhere near good enough to be demands such privileges.

His second touch is a tackle. Not good enough in my opinion for the style we are trying to adopt. Would be giving everything to get Ki if I was Gus. Superb passer of the ball. He was distracted and injured late season but he was one of our best players all year we shouldn't forget.

he did add some hight and strength in a very flimsy side at set plays in defence something that needs to be addressed as we concede too many in this manner.

That's what makes it conclusive to me, Poyet doesn't rate him, Paolo didn't rate him, Eskişehirspor didn't rate him and sent him back half way into his loan spell and I saw him play a few games as well as followed his performance scoring and he can't pass and has a touch like a rapist. I don't want him because he's squarest peg for the roundest of holes and it seems the club can see this. Trust in Gus, he don't want him either.
