A string of free performances, from music to performance art, will take place at Queen Victoria Square in the city centre, on Saturday (June 28). Hull celebrated in November when it was chosen to be the UK City of Culture in 2017. The event, which runs from noon until 6.15pm, will showcase Hullâs diverse cultural offerings and talent that can be enjoyed in the build-up to 2017. Visitors will witness a fun-packed programme of everything that makes Hullâs City of Culture so unique. There will be ten-minute performances of theatre, comedy, music, film, dance literature, heritage and festivals throughout the day. A stage, large screen and the Queen Victoria statue will act as the backdrop for 40 live performances and short films involving 300 performers and artists. Councillor Steven Bayes, portfolio holder for UK City of Culture 2017, said: âThe support the people of Hull showed for City of Culture during the bid process was phenomenal. âWe know their backing on social media and by attending events, helped to convince the judges that Hull deserved to win the title of City of Culture 2017.â Local artists and organisations representing each cultural genre will be the backbone of the celebration. Among the performers will be four-piece music collective Endoflevelbaddie who will be showcasing some striking sounds and visuals and local theatre company Ensemble 52, whose members will recreate their recent successful performance of Philip Larkinâs famous poem, The Whitsun Weddings. Meanwhile, Dutch artist Gijs van Bon, whose sand-writing machine was a hit at last yearâs Freedom Festival, will spell out key Freedom messages on the ground, inspired by Nelson Mandela, around Queen Victoria Square. Urban Angels aerial acrobatics troupe will take part in a stunning drive-by display with pirate-themed, gravity-defying feats taking place. In addition, the Mayor of the current UK City of Culture Derry-Londonderry, Councillor Brenda Stevenson, will make an appearance on the large screen to send a goodwill message to the people of Hull, in readiness for our time as UK City of Culture. Andrew Pearson, director of theatre company Ensemble 52 and a member of the 2017 bid team, said: âThe people of Hull were a huge factor in winning City of Culture. âThis is a great opportunity to see some of the creative talent we have in this city come together to celebrate this huge achievement.â The party will join up with the Lord Mayor's Centenary celebrations taking place at the same time in Queens Gardens and across the city centre. There will be further after-show events in venues across the city. City of Culture party events include ... Apparently, there's been bit and bobs online for a couple of weeks, but the message hasn't really got out. I follow Hull City Of Culture on Facebook and Twitter, but didn't know anything about this, which is a bit of a worry.
But, the mad dogs and sophisticats are playing - that's a good start! They played at my wedding in '04!
That's strange.. word from The Snooker Club is that Papa Allam is holding a "Tigers of Culture" event the same day..
i knew about it as i know someone on the city of culture organizing committee and people that are helping out on saturday but the publicity for this as being a bit late in the day :]
I would like some of the City of Culture stuff to be unplanned and impromptu between the bigger festivals. Some flash mob guerilla culture could be a good thing. Being random and spontaneous needs to be part of it.
Clearly we need to replace the odious Stephen Bayes with the delightful Rosie Millard as soon as possible.
There's been a little bit on the FC website about it for weeks as part of the Hull & Proud week celebrations.
