Please list some players in the history of World Football that have been sold for more than £4m at the age of 32? There aren't many, so it clearly isn't "peanuts". In any case it was £4m plus add ons, so the fee is potentially more than £4m. The deal was reported to be £8m to £10m when first announced, the £4m is the upfront fee.
Its not merely hype and "potential". He is already performing to a very high level. Last season he was voted by his peers into the PFA Premier League team of the year. How much have you actually seen him play in person? I'm guessing like with the vast majority of Man Uid fans who have been passing comment on him, not a lot if at all.
Ultimately he's a left back. No left back is or ever was worth 40 million because they can only impact the game so much. Bale would never have gone for anywhere near 80 million if he hadn't evolved and carved out a career as a wide forward. Saints are playing hard ball but will sell. A club of their position can't afford to keep a left back when that sort of money is being thrown around (if the figures are true).
He could quite easily become a winger as Gareth Bale did. Shaw already is given a huge amount of license to get forward at Saints and played as a winger in Saints youth teams like Gareth Bale did. At the same age, Shaw looks the more impressive player. They won't if their valuation isn't met. Shaw is under contract until 2018 so that gives them some leeway. If United don't make a big enough offer, he'll stay. That is condescending bull****. Saints are under no financial pressure to sell him and want to keep him. Why should the Liebherr's roll over and have their bellies tickled just because Utd make a bid?
Im actually a Chelsea fan but thats by the by. Admittedly I have probably seen him play less than half a dozen times and he looks good. But what I am saying is, will he improve? Michael Owen didnt, he got worse. Rooney didnt, he froze at the same level. Because right now Luke Shaw is not worth anywhere near £40m (nor do I believe he ever will be). All I am saying is, teenage players that play this well usually either peak early and turn terrible (see every Chelsea youth player of the 90's bar Terry, plus Michael Owen), or dont live up to the inevitable hype of being thrust into such a big club at an early age, whether thats because the expectations are unrealistic or not. This is what happened to Rooney. Who some people believed would be a god by the time he was 25.
As Saints have him under contract until 2018 and have no financial need to sell they can pick whatever reason they want to justify a price tag.
exactly, Cristiano Ronaldo wasnt very good at 19. We used to mock him to **** on 606 with his step overs and no end product. That kid did alright. My point is this.....what a player does when he is 18, or how good he looks, quite often is a bad indicator on what player he becomes as an adult.
I actually agree with you on that and fair play to Saints, but I'm just saying that him being better than Bale was at his age doesn't mean anything.
I didn't actually say you were a United fan. Not a lot to judge him on then. Michael Owen went on to become European footballer of the year. It was injuries that screwed him. Define "worth". Because if Southampton deem he is worth £40m to them, then that is how much is is worth to them. They have no financial pressure to sell so can pick a price. I don't think using Chelsea's academy as an example is a good line for you to be taking. Southampton's academy has a significantly better track record of producing players than Chelsea.
You are right though, if you dont need to sell him, and dont want to sell him, then you hold all the cards and can demand whatever fee you want. Though why you would drive the price up to put them off rather than just flatly say "No" is weird.
Because if you don't cash in on him now, you'll never get offered that sort of cash for Shaw again. YOu really think he will be worth £50m in 2016?
Chelsea got £50m for a 27 year old David Luiz in 2014, so anything is possible. Thats modern football for you. On what is that based?
I can't really speak for Bodanki but I see that 'your position' suggests a club that is under attack from potential buyers of your players and that £34 million would be very difficult to turn down as it would prove more than useful to replace said players. £34 million for your left back. You could replace him and buy two more players with that. Just how I see it.
Alternatively they could turn it down, keep Shaw and improve the squad regardless of player sales with this summer's transfer budget.
Yes, but you are speaking as a fan. They could do that. However, as they'd more than likely not want to spend their own cash on those players, they probably won't.
