I would question the whole idea of picking defenders based on their skill as wingers. I may be old fashioned but if you have 4 PROPER defenders and a goalkeeper the other 6 players ought to be able to fashion attacks, without their help.
Bearing in mind that Glenda (who is an atrocious defender) completely lost his man and had no idea where he was for the first goal, this is totally true. Firstly and foremost they are there to defend. So what if Johnson set up our goal. If he had defended well for Uruguays first goal, the player would never have been able to cross for Suarez to score in the first place. We have wide midfielders and wingers for attacking play, for fullbacks it should a secondary consideration. Almost like a tie-break question.
BBC had the Pirlo stats up. 5 sprints all game, and slowest of the game 1 MFs. But he covered close to the same yards as Gerrard and Rooney. That is the mark of a measured player operating well beyond his best years.
"Sadly, results today will not see Robbie Savage eliminated from the World Cup" You cannot refute the kudos power of that League Cup win.
Italy pressed to mislay passes in MF and Costa Rica are straight down the other end. Italy are upping their tempo a bit now.
Let's be honest lads, can you actually see us getting anything out of the game versus Costa Rica, regardless if we're playing for a miracle or just pride? I see England returning home with zero points. After the Uruguay game, the players looked defeated and dejected. Not one of them appeared to have anything left to give.
An interesting point, to me at least, is why the two best US players of the past decade, Donovan and Dempsey, both scored big goals every world cup they played in and consistently exceeded expectations, while the best players England have had in the same period (non defenders), say Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard, have so regularly underperformed. TBF, while I'm no Gerrard fan, he's done okay, though no better than okay, overall. But Lampard and Rooney have a goal between them. If your three big players have four goals between them in three world cups, you'll struggle no matter who you are. And they've certainly had their chances, they just have not delivered. I wonder what odds I could have gotten that Costa Rica would be 2-0 after two games...
Assuming Costa Rica don't lose today, Woy should field the kids. Italy and Uruguay can sort the other place themselves.
When the Italy attacks break down, Costa Rica play out fast or use the long ball (which Campbell has been winning) .
Or should he play, say, Hart at striker and Rooney in goal to send Costa Rica through and hopefully Uruguay home...
i say we pick 11 guys from the fans... They might show more commitment. Woy and the rest of them can f... off back for their summer holidays and shopping in Dubai.
