"Alan Pardew has blamed the World Cup for Newcastle United’s poor end of season run last season.

The Magpies chief feels that some of his players were focused on international selection ahead of the finals in Brazil and this impacted United’s form.

Top scorer Loic Remy missed a large chunk of games while Moussa Sissoko suffered injuries in the run-in.

Both Tim Krul and Cheick Tiote were also eager to make it into the squad of Holland and Ivory Coast respectively.

Pardew told one of United’s media partners the BBC: “We were affected by the World Cup, there’s no doubt about that in my mind.”

Pardew also stated that failure by the club’s board to replace Yohan Cabaye proved to be a hammer blow to the club.

He said: “We weren’t as strong then as we were in the first half of the season when we lost Yohan Cabaye and didn’t replace him, but certainly I’m expecting the team to be much stronger.”

United’s work in the transfer market has suffered a few hits with Remy Cabella at the World Cup with France and the figures talked about for Clement Grenier falling short according to Lyon sources.

Pierre-Michel Lagossa is also thought to have snubbed a move to Tyneside as Newcastle’s wage offer wasn’t acceptable in his eyes.

But Pardew hopes to send out a stronger squad next term.

He said: “That will give our fans some encouragement and some optimism as it all got very negative towards the end.

“The key ingredient is optimism and that’s something we need to give back to our fans.”"

Good old Pards getting the excuses rolling again. He makes a good point though - I can see what a negative impact the World Cup has had on so many teams who have international players in their squads. Just look at Liverpool with Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling etc all performing below their usual standards and/or feigning injury due to the looming distraction of the World Cup. Indeed, what kind of player would even consider trying to play their very best at such a time in order to maximise their chances of being selected to represent their country?

That's ironic as he will use the WC to explain the poor start we will have too..
Can't believe he's already started spouting his bullshit again.. ****er.

I thought this was going to be a thread about what excuses he is going to use for the coming season. I bet you fatigue from players having been at the world cup gets used at least once. Not that there are that many of our players there.

Yes, because goalkeepers get injured all the time, so Krul was likely to be saving himself <doh>

With the exception of Remy, the opposite should be true, as most of our better players would have been on the fringes of international squads, they should have been busting a gut to get a place.

I have to say I think this is true to a certain extent, but only because we were reliant on one player to drag us through the **** when Cabaye went..................Remy. Clearly the guy had his eye on the World Cup and was certainly not going to jeopardise it for Newcastle United. Its all very well saying it but he is still backing away from getting the crux of the matter. These problems were entirely the clubs own making:

    - Remy not wanting to play and try too hard

Nobody forced the club to take the cheaper option of going for a loan player who had no long term loyalty to the club in a world cup year.

    - Overreliance on Remy following departure. Nobody forced the club to sell but not replace, or better still have the squad better stocked in the first place to deal with departures.

Its alright wheeling out Alan to feed the usual party lines, but it doesn't wash anymore. Either staff the squad properly or don't. Just stop with hilarious attempts to sell it as something else or lay the blame elsewhere.

    Blah blah blah alan.

The best way they can achieve some positivity within the fanbase is this pathetic bottom feeder resigning.

Hmm I'd have to disagree. I think having some sort of progressive policy for the club would be the best way and would garner the most support. I don't Pardew leaving is top priority. It will probably have minimal impact.

I disagree with both of you, if we signed some world class players, and Mike Ashley bought me an ice cream, I think that would be the best way to get support <laugh>

Unless you explicitly outline cornettos and white-chocolate magnums, I'm going to assume NUFC not606 poster of the year is going to be talking football <wah>

*NUFC Not606 poster of the year is a dubious title given the lack of hot lesbians on this board <wah>

White chocolate? You have just plummeted in my estimation given the sickly nature of white chocolate. Given you were already at ground zero estimation wise, I'm not sure where this leaves us. I will have to reconsider our relationship and how we move forward from.

To enable me to do this I will begin drinking rum tonight at exactly 5.30pm and won't stop until I have figured this out.
