With the World Cup starting tomorrow, I must admit that I am now looking forward to it like I used to when I was young again. I saw this goal this morning and although there have been several great goals over the years, I think this one from 1970 remains my favourite http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27005795
Carlos Alberto. It is often referenced in coaching books, in videos, courses as an example of excellence. Starts at the back. Goes through the thirds, posession and skill shifts the opposition across the pitch and creates space , the ball is switched and Alberto scores due to patiently holding his run and space. Even kids understand its perfection.
Maradonna versus England? After his first goal, Peter Reid should have kicked him into the crowd on the half line before he started his run
The second or third goal that Russia scored against Belgium when they lost 3-4 in 1986. Was it somebody Bonderenko ? He scored a hat-trick and still finished on the losing side. That was a really good Russian team with Rats, Daeseyev (keeper sp?) and others
Dennis Bergkamp Vs Argentina in 98, pure quality. I would never vote for that cheating little fat pr1ck in a million years, still cannot understand why Monkey's heed didn't put him on his ass in the centre circle, I hope it keeps him up at night!!
When this was put to Peter Reid (an excellent ball winner and one of the discoveries of our 1986 campaign), he said he would have done, but Maradonna was so quick nobody could catch him. Whether you like the man or not, you cannot deny that the goal was peerless from the moment when he pirouetted past 2 players in his own half to when he slipped the ball past Shilts whilst being tackled. It was a remarkable goal, scored by a complete dung breath. But then it is football not the Nobel Peace Prize
Now if they can only sort out the crap refereeing everyone might be happy The greatest football tournament, ruined by the usual incompetent foreign officials and the refusal by FIFA to use easily available technology like replays. Poor. So very very poor
Agree with Carlos Alberto in the 1970 final, also Maradona's run in 86 in Mexico. But may I add David Platt's last gasp extra time winner for England v Belgium at Italia 90? It didn't have the build-up of the other goals, but it was a bloody good goal with the ball coming over his shoulder, plus the drama of a winner in the 119th minute.
