Sunderland could still secure a permanent deal for Fabio Borini, but reports from the Northern Echo suggest that they will have to pay Liverpool over £10.5m to do so.

The Italy international spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, where he starred as the Black Cats avoided relegation and made an appearance in the Capital One Cup Final.

But since then he has returned to Anfield – where he played in an end of season friendly – and has been tipped to feature heavily for the Reds next season as they plot to balance Champions League football with domestic action.

However the signing of Rickie Lambert from Southampton has thrown Borini’s future into doubt, with the England World Cup star set to be first in line behind Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Reports indicate that if a fee of £10.5m or above – the sum paid for the versatile attacker in 2012 – is received, then Liverpool may well consider selling.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is known to be a huge fan of Borini after using him as his side completed a miraculous late season surge to avoid the drop, but he may be reluctant to bid as high as the Merseysiders are asking.

The 23-year-old netted 10 goals while in the North East.

I've always thought they'd sell if they got their money back but will we dig deep?

Yeah I think that price quoted seems fair. He was great last season and if he keeps improving will be a great addition (plus have a decent resale value if neccesery).

I`m not sure what people might think a really "fair price" (is there such a thing?) for Borini is but it would be at least £7-8m imo - if we were to pay £10.5m for him has he not saved us the extra £2-3.5m in keeping us up last year (accepted not single handedly)??

I`d have him for that price - I htink the issue is whether he thinks we are good enough for him... may well swing on who else we bring in

Is that including add ons and appearances? £7-8 initial with add ons up to £10.5 mil sounds good to me.

I'm not sure that Borini would want to sign permanently if we are going to continue playing with only one up front. He sees himself as a striker, but doesn't have the physical presence to play as a sole front man.

He scored 10 goals last season playing mainly from the wing. Play him alongside Wickham and I think that would increase to 15 to 20, and you would pay £10million plus for any young striker likely to deliver that return in the Premier League.

Last sentence above is key for me. He'll want to get back into the national squad asap and I'm sure he'll be considering whether we can help him achieve that.

    I say do it.

It's a bit much but not massively, and he's improving still.

I think it depends on the opponent and how Gus want's approach the game. He'd get time in the middle I reckon. I think he played on the left side of the front three more out of necessity more than anything, Giacc was adapting slow and Mavrias was obviously miles off, we just had no other options without changing the entire system. I quite like our 433 and glad we stuck with it.

Just pay it and have done, before a big Italian club starts sniffing around.

Not a dig at anybody here but those saying he isn't maybe worth £10.5 mil who would they have instead of him in the same price bracket?

We know what he's capable of. He is liked by Gus which must give a player confidence. He now knows what SAFC are capable of results wise from the last few very difficult away games AND he is playing every game.
In a good team he can only get better and even if it's not with us there must still be a decent sell on value.

Get him ASAP as far as I am concerned.

If we've got any ambitions as a club then we have to be getting players in like Borini, £10m probably a fair price IMO

I can only see it happening if we offload Scocco. 10m is too much but we know what we're getting, he knows what hed be getting. Most importantly he can play all three of the forward positions in gus' system which makes him like a multi tool and makes the price seem more reasonable.

Id quite happily lose Scocco (£3m), Graham (£1m) and Fletcher (£4m) if it meant bringing Borini in permanently a net £2.5m yes please.

I'd like to keep Scocco. You need 4 options up front, minimum. Connor, Jozy, Borini (please) and Scocco. fletchers days appear numbered.
