I imagine the stewards got it right, Perez's move off the racing line is far too late to defend against Massa, and I can't see it being an attempt on Vettel,, someone with bad brakes isn't going to try an outlandish late braking move. Massa maybe should have given him a bit of room, but then why should he? he's supposed to be racing against 20 of the top drivers in the world + Chilton.
214 Gs in this one apparently
It is debatable and I am no expert and I am not a huge fan of Perez but I feel Massa should have anticipated a defence was likely and been ready to take avoiding action, he didn't and I suspect his judgement was impaired with the excitement. I know this won't make sense to all but he was allowed through by Williams team order, felt he needed to deliver to prove it was a good call and got carried away and misjudged forgetting his racing instinct for a short moment. At best it was a racing incident, at worse I feel it was Massa's mistake.
Kinda shows Massa also turning in slightly too. No doubt there is contact, I just can't quite remember the fireballs on the day. Must be my memory lapsing.
Afternoon all, been away all weekend so only just caught up - thoroughly enjoyed that one! On this incident, to me it looks like Perez deviates from the racing line in the braking zone, which gives Massa no chance to avoid him. Compared to Vettel in that excellent graphic above, he's not on the natural line you'd normally take into the first corner. Equally, Massa drove very poorly in the last few laps and should have been further up the road by the time of the incident, so there was probably an element of desperation in that move too, and he could have given Perez more room.
Wow what a race! Canada usually serves up something unusual and is one of my favourites (Spa being another). And great victory for Riccardo! Was patient, waited for the right opportunity to overtake Seb, Sergio and Nico at the end and won. Seb has been looking stronger and stronger in recent races and now we had a chance to see them more or less on level terms. Seb qualified higher and got a good jump on Lewis through the 2nd corner, but missed out on the pit stops. Riccardo was able to match Seb who could not overtake him even though they are in the same car, which suggests these guys are fairly evenly matched in Canada, but have to wait and see at other tracks (where demands are different). As expected the battle between these two hasn't begun in earnest yet but it will... How will the 4x WDC react if he isn't even Red Bull's number 1 (by points)? This will develop later in the season I think, especially if Red Bull can close the gap further to Mercedes adding possibly more points to any potential fire!... But for now its not making headlines... As for Lewis and Nico... Lewis is incredibly unlucky with mechanical issues, affecting both cars for ERS, but more Lewis's with brakes. Someone made a good point above about brake balance with Lewis using more rear... that could be a factor in the failure, but we've now seen this new brake by wire design pushed to the limits... Also great drive by Nico to bring it home in 2nd... I thought he would fall way back down the order... As for Nico cutting of the chicane... No penalty for me, yes he did gain an advantage in time (not position) of about 0.5 s but I think everyone wanted to see Lewis battle Nico... Maybe not a reason not to give it, but Nico used up all of his leniency points with that one... Maybe the Stewards will remember that one for another race... They shouldn't, but this sort of bias does happen. As for the championship. Another 42 points to reclaim... Lewis needs to another run now. But back on something I mentioned after Monaco... he has retired again losing 18 points (like the 25 in Australia) but seems quite relaxed about the situation unlike in Monaco (where he lost only 7 and the lead in the championship which could also be significant)... Again due to retirement he has time to cool down and reflect before talking or being in front of cameras. The adrenaline has decreased and he seems more mature... Just an observation. As for Felipe and Sergio... At first I thought Sergio's brakes had gone... Then realised that that would make him rear-end someone and not collide sideways... After seeing the videos above I think Sergio does drift leftwards fairly late but Felipe shouldn't have been that tight to him (and actually steers slightly towards Sergio before the latter drifts leftwards). Seb was also very lucky not to be taken out! Definitely the sort of good luck no-one would begrudge him of! I'd say racing incident as Sergio is gaining on Seb and moves to overtake him but doesn't think about Felipe. But can see why Sergio is given a 5 place penalty (and not more like Massa wants)... He does need to be more aware of cars around him, but is a good driver and I rate him. So many times now last year and now this one where he drives much better than Jenson but somehow doesn't keep it together and Jenson ends up with the points... (reminds me of me and my older brother where I'd be faster/better but he'd beat me, by me being too enthusiastic/ inexperienced... frustrating because I'd know I was better but couldn't empirically prove it!). He needs to learn to take the points on offer and play the long game, although 3rd was on offer so I understand... Also any footage on Jenson's rise to 4th? It wasn't just all going on up front!
at 2 posts above Did the F1 only just get broadcast in Norfolk? I havnt seen Buttons move on video but apparently Alonso tried a move on hulk at the hairpin that opened the door to button.
I think Massa did play a part in it, both drivers were tired in the crap boxes they were driving, both lost out on fantastic results for the teams and for the fans. The crowd were going mental when Massa appeared to be in 1st... such a shame, looks like we will have to wait to see him back up there. Perez needed the result to match that amazing performance as well.
Can somebody put up the Austrian thread please, the poll table won't be hard as only one person got it right !!! Thanks in advance.
Oh.. and for those who are saying Hamilton overdrove the car and that is why he didnt finish the race? Well Wolff puts an end to that theory. This is what he had to say. Wolff, however, rejected the theory that the reliability problems last week in Canada were caused by Hamilton and Rosberg pushing their cars too hard in battle. "The damage would have occurred even if they had slowed down," he insists. Wolff told Sport Bild: "We told the drivers how to manage it by changing the brake balance and braking more carefully. Both of them did it exactly to our specifications. "That what happened to Lewis did not also happen to Nico was just pure luck."
so they told them there was a problem, they still drove the cars full whack to be over 30 seconds ahead of the field, and you don't think they broke the cars?
Must have been our imagination that they dropped their pace by 2/3 secs a lap after being told they had issues by the team.........
Miggins..what part of this did you miss?
