Im hoping so. I honestly think Altidore has potential. He can score with USA on a regular basis.

He is only 23 as well so he can improve. I reckon playing in the World Cup will be him new confidence. He is the only player to do so this summer as well which should bode well too.

Good lad. I think it speaks volumes of how well liked he is in wear side when his goal return was so low. His work ethic I can't mock and he is certainly good for the team in terms of build up. Hopefully we will be coming back as an improved player. Fair play to Gus saying he wants him at the club, will do his confidence good.

It would be great if he 'finds' his shooting boots again and returns full of confidence.
Even better if he wins the 'player of the tournament' after scoring 9 goals and we sell him to Dortmund for 32 million!!

Fair play to him, 1st was just a tap in, took 2nd very well but goalie should have done better
Lots of our fans got time for him, u could see them willing him on to score, hope he comes back oozing confidence

The fans were incredible tbh and I get the feeling he appreciates it.

It was remarkable that the vast majority of fans stuck with at a time when we were desperate for goals and looking relegated.

We're sometimes criticised for scapegoating players but we can be proud of the way we've stuck by him.

We have a Sunderland player in the World Cup ....... great innit <ok>

Of course, for anyone but us! He really should have had so many more for us. I like his effort and contribution everywhere else on the park. He gets one more year to show me what he's got.

Goals breed confidence, he'd never have attempted that second if not for breaking his barren run.

Could have had a hat trick if it wasnt for dempsey being a greedy cnut

His general play last season was good. It was just in front of goal he let himself down, and the longer the wait for the goals came the more drained of confidence he was. You're never going to score goals with no confidence.

This brace will do him the world of good and hopefully now he can grab a couple in Brazil to come back here with his confidence restored.

Not speaking for me mate. His general play last season was total ****e - couldn't trap a bag of cement, hopeless in the the air, poor positioning and we all know how good he was in front of goal.

Exactly which bit of his play was good?

Of the top of my head ........ made the winner at home to Newcastle, won the winner at Chelsea.

Besides I was actually commenting on,
"This brace will do him the world of good and hopefully now he can grab a couple in Brazil to come back here with his confidence restored."

I doubt anyone would disagree with that tbh.

That second goal was a cracker. Looking from behind the goal, I don't think the goalie could have stopped that.

He certainly didn't look like a player short on confidence. Odd how putting the USA shirt on affects his game.

If he get an early season goal like that in August for us, it could make all the difference.

Why would you want a striker who's good in the air when we play the ball on the deck? It's comments like that which make me question your view of players when you have absolutely no comprehension of what Gus is trying to achieve with us.

We don't play long balls, we don't play with natural sided wingers. There's no call for the sort of player you're demanding. As for trapping the ball he does just fine, you must conveniently look the other way when he gets the ball. His positioning isn't poor, coming short was instruction from Gus, He admitted it. Your comments on him in front of goal shows that you're impatient and have a completely lack of empathy on how confidence effects a striker. I know you're a big Wickham fan, why not listen to what he has to say about strikers and confidence. Then you can apply it to Jozy and be a proper fan. <doh>

For me Wickham starts and Jozy gets some protection coming on.

That's the way it was supposed to be wasn't it? Only it was our 12m striker Fletcher to start and our 5m understudy Jozy to be eased in while Wickham got first team experience away. Fletcher's injury stopped all that and we had to explore other set ups.
