Unfortunately you have been brainwashed like most others into believing Pele as the greatest ever footballer and holier than thou. You should be open-minded and wisely research and realise that he is a charlatan and a very very unpleasant individual

I do believe his greatness is overstated, but I'm too young to really judge. Certainly my father told me that Garrincha was a better player. Whereas time was kind to Pele's legacy, Garrincha's descent into alcoholism made him an uncomfortable role model. I think this is what it comes down to. Is the greatest player, purely the greatest talent, or is it the whole package in terms of what they bring to the game in the wider sense? For me it comes down to ability and from what I have seen, Maradona is the greatest footballer to have ever lived.

Completely agree. Could never work out how Pele/Maradona were even considered equal, Maradona's off the charts. I'd put the likes of Garrincha, Carlos Alberto, Socrates and Zico ahead of Pele.

Pele was the greatest player of his generation, but it almost impossible to compare him with greats from other generations.

Maradona was only off the chart due to the drugs intake.

I saw Pele (on tv) 1966 onwards and he was a great. Think 1970 World Cup. Maradona was a great but also had flaws. It seems sadly most greats do have some flaw but perhaps thats called being human.

Would also say IMO Socrates whilst out of this world and C Alberto and Zico being very good (in relative terms) none of these were in Pele's class.

If we are talking football greats lets just stick to deciding on football talent not human flaws.

Yes. Pele played with great players; Maradona sometimes with mediocre ones. And yet he made these mediocre players look good. The hallmark of the truly great player.

Nothing really new in the article as far as I can see.
Sort of story that seems to come out at every World Cup.

Pele was considered the best player in the world by his contemporaries and commentators alike during his career.
Was he the best ever? Possibly, but every generation has its great players who can lay claim to that honour at the time.

Personally, I cant abide Maradona, all I see is a cheating, coke-heed who would have been banned in the modern game.
Not fit to be called the Greatest.

    Good Lineker documentary last night.
Put Garrincha on the same footing as Pele- quite rightly so.
