Just watching a documentary about the build up to the final, I didn't realise how much sway we had at FIFA! We ruled the joint.

Ye I'm watching it now. Hated the Dutch getting beat at the time. Remember the old man going mad about the bloody Germans and that little bastard Muller.

Two bad fouls by Vogts on Cruyff in 30 seconds, he'd a been booked at least nowadays. Whole game woulda changed with that.

The more I look at the kits the more I want the tiger head back on ours! Am I allowed to say that?

I watched the '70 one yesterday. Brazil were outstanding, so good on and with the ball that they pretty much strolled around until they got into the final 3rd.

Brilliant clip of Carlos Alberto still tying up his shorts while he receives the pass from Pele from kick off.

Amazing how Brazil ruled the universe in WC70 yet 4 years later nearly all that team had gone and been replaced by cloggers.

Has there ever been such a quick demise?

I'd forgotten how Cruyff had taken off one of the adidas stripes from his shirt (unlike his colleagues) as he was in dispute with them about money.

Sir Stanley Rous was getting too old by 74 but his successor Havelange has ****ed it up beyond all recognition.

    Witness the Qatar fiasco.

WC78 next Sat should be another 70s corker

First World Cup I remember being really into. I was a bit too young in 70 and have no memories of it, although I did watch it apparently.

Anyway. The final. Holland penalty in first minute. I leapt off the sofa in delight and bashed my head. Really hurt. My old man went mad with me!

    Gutted when Germany came back.

Lot of niggle and theatrics in that game.

Jack Taylor had his work cut out.

These World Cup documentaries have been truly outstanding - hope the standard maintains - looking forward to 78, 82 and 86.

I noticed watching the final that some of the Dutch shirts had three stripes down the arms and others 2.
Also no Adidas , Umbro badges on the shirts at that time

    Sorry to be a pedant..

Believe also that around 74 marked the start of the trefoil emblem for adidas.

We all had the bag for school with it on!

    On ebay right now....

I had 50p on Holland at 9 to 1 to win the 1974 world cup before the tournament started. If anyone was gutted that they lost in the final, think of me. Probably only Cruyff himself was more upset than me. I'd been earning £10 a week before tax but by then I hadn't got a job. I could have had a holiday with kind of winnings. Still narked and haven't had a bet since. I couldn't afford to lose that kind of stake.

Do you think you could go for a 50p on Holland this year? Go on you know you want to!!

1974 was the start of my gambling. I picked out Snow Knight in the Derby won at 50/1.

And people still ****ing moan nowadays about an anti English bias despite there being zero evidence.

Who was it who a couple of weeks ago said Platini had said 'on many occasions that he doesnt want England to ever win and hates our football'. Of course when i asked him to find one of these quotes from 'many occasions' he didnt produce any....

The evidence is that we get knocked out to a **** refereeing decision in every major tournament.
