Just a way of deflecting the bad political mess Argentina are in, in any case, the fact that oil had been discovered around the islands would suggest to me there is ZERO chance they will move away from British control

They need to start behaving themselves, its a shame really, but no one in the Falklands wants anything to do with them, we should claim back the Empire, now that would be some banner.:sad::sad::sad::wink::wink::emoticon-0100-smile

The Falklands is a ridiculous situation and makes us look stupid imo ........ the islanders really get on my tits with their exaggerated Englishness.

How would we feel about the Isle of Wight being occupied by Spanish speaking people poncing about being more Argentinian than people are in Argentina? How would we like them building a military base, declaring an exclusion zone and drilling for oil?

Thatcher wanted shot of the place, we'd originally nicked off Argentina, but relented due to the whinging of the islanders.

It costs more than it's worth and just makes us look like we can't let go of the past.

I don't agree with the banner at all though, no place for politics in football ...... especially during a competition.

What a load of ****. The Falklands have been British since before Argentina existed. They are 500km away from the nearest point of Argentina. We should nuke the corned beef eating scum and be done with it! If they want a fight I'm happy to join up.

not strictly true Smug. The Argentinians have "owned" these islands for the grand total of one year back in 1833. Till then it was passed around between us, Spain France and the States. They have no real right to these Islands other than its close proximity to the main land, certainly no historical claim. At the time I had no clue why we would ever want to go to war over a place that far away from the UK. But it put Thatcher in power for another 5 years and since then Oil has been discovered, so as I say, no chance it will ever change hands now.

    Cheers <ok>

    No it's not all ****.
Thatcher did want rid, Argentina did occupy it after we abandoned it and that was after they gained independence from Spain.
We'd already left the islands by then.

BTW, Sunderland is further away from the Isle of Wight than the Falklands are from Argentina <laugh>

    Yeah I was generalising mate.

The fact that it was 'passed around between us, Spain France and the States' shows how tenuous our own claim is.

Argentina's hold on the islands was ended by British military force iirc.

TBH I don't know a huge amount about the subject, I just think the whole situation makes us look idiotic.

People get sucked into this mad patriotic **** just because there might be oil there and because they sing God save the Queen a lot.

Look at Gibraltor, that's closer to Spain but part of the empire. Guess the thread was not about who's island it is, more of why do that at a football match for gods sake.

I often work in the Falklands and surrounding areas.
The majority of the 'newly discovered' oil is further North which is why the shipping lanes in the South Atlantic are currently under scrutiny and in the process of being changed.
Brazil is attempting to gain control of the find as it is close to their territorial waters.

    Back to the thread...
The banner has no place in football... It's an utter disgrace.
If we meet Argentina along the way ... There will be 'hell on' !!

Many seem to forget that the Falklands are hundreds of miles from the Argentine mainland, so their geographical claim to these islands is pretty weak in comparison to the historical claim that we have.
As for the banner being displayed by these players, it is an utter disgrace and very strong action should be taken against them.

Whether they have the legitimate right to the islands or not, its a grey area where both countries have reasonable claims, it is all superseded by the fact that they invaded, caused a war over it, got spanked, and lost! How they have the nerve to try and claim it through political means after causing the death of nearly 1000 soldiers on both sides is just downright cheeky! We cannot possibly give them the islands when families of the british soldiers that died are still living with the losses that they have suffered. We can give them the islands after we have bled the place dry thank you very much! Maybe in a few hundred years time!

Yeah, we nicked it by force having abandoned it as more trouble than it was worth <ok>

You're further away from the Isle of Wight than they are from the Islands ......... it's the governor's plumed hat that's my biggest problem.
