O/T: and so it goes on, can we please stop bashing religion?

I have once or twice.

 

Getting away from the extremism of any religion, which the vast majority of its followers hate as much as any athiest, it's hard to claim that Christianity in the form of the Catholic Church (and hence far more moderate) haven't ****ed up society to an extent. A few examples are how they've held back gay marriage for absolutely ages, and (less seriously) are still allowed to **** pupils over in science gcse's by hiding that evolution is a theory. However, I do think that although aspects of religion can't avoid being bashed, this is primarily the governments fault for giving religion so much special treatment. Basically, the Catholic Church and extremism...yeah, bash those, but less fundamentalist views are should probably get an easier ride, they just get tarred with the same brush.

 

1. Yes. And they do via selecting information that only serves to corroborate their view. To an extent we all do this, in it's extreme form it can be and is very ugly. My point is that that the insecure and fanatical believers, not necessarily religionists, take this to unacceptable levels based on fear/intollerance/hate.

3. I don't think that comment merits a response.

4. I would be alarmed if anyone did and '5.' equally alarmed if anyone wasn't.

You're telling people to stop 'bashing religion' which is simply your definition.

If I choose to criticise a religious doctrine that's my choice in a democracy ....... I may even be correct in doing so.

I'm also perfectly within my rights to disagree with any religious doctrine I find intolerable.

I find the whipping and execution of someone, purely on religious grounds, to be intolerable.

Do you find it acceptable .......... yes or no?

Spot on mate. I've seen many good mates argue with each other endlessly over it, and it gets pretty heated at times. For me, it's a topic that just goes round and round in circles. Neither side is ever going to convince the other, so I think the best thing is just to agree to disagree, and get on with each other as civilised human beings.

Personally I'd much rather just talk about footy and birds like.

 

Christianity, Islam, Judaism etc etc it's all a load of bollocks IMO.

 

Religion was invented by man to frighten other men into submission to achieve their goals - a bit like UKIP with immigration lol

 

If in doubt, create your own religion, and say '**** you' to anyone who don't like it, or just torture and kill at will.

2. In principle, I agree. I do not agree that I have done anything to deny you that basic human right

4. Which is rarely practised, even in places where it is instituted, most Islamic states do not practise these forms of tyranny. Besides, I believe such things deny our humanity for both giver and receiver.

Many Atheists are angry and I can fully understand why. I would also like to sympathise with the feeling that you feel your beliefs are under attack and you -'the self' feel invaded.

If we can remove anger (bitterness/frustration) and bigotry from our discussion, there is much to be gained by all. I feel that what religionists need to recognise is that there are a growing number of people who are dissatisfied by religious dogmas. All this, despite the inumerable scholars who pour over ancient scripts in their attempts to clarify (their) truth and provide society with answers that will make things better for all.

 

World leaders were outraged that this woman was due to be beaten & executed purely on the grounds of religion.
David Cameron said it was barbaric, I agree.

If you think that means everyone is 'bashing religion' them tough luck I'm afraid.

I'll always speak out against such disgusting religious practices so the answer to your thread question is ........... no.
