England v Peru. A fixture that at any other time would hardly set pulses racing, but then, this is not any other time.

In exactly 365 hours, England's 2014 World Cup campaign will get under way when they take on Italy. The hopes of a nation resting on their shoulders.

Before then Roy Hodgson's men play three warm-up games. Three auditions for the 23 players in the squad to stake their claim for a place in the starting XI come 14 June.

It's only a friendly? Try telling that to the likes of Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana.

    -------

Shaw is England's major doubt for their final pre-World Cup friendly on home soil against Peru on Friday after developing a cold.

Manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed England have no injury concerns but Southampton left-back Shaw is ill.

"Obviously we're very cautious. He travelled down separately and didn't train today [Thursday]," said Hodgson.

"I couldn't tell you if he'll recover for tomorrow, but it's a very minor issue. We won't know until tomorrow."

The 18-year-old made his England debut in a friendly against Denmark in March and was named in Hodgson's 23-man World Cup squad ahead of 33-year-old Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, who subsequently retired from international football.

Since breaking into the England squad, Shaw has reportedly attracted interest from other Premier League clubs, with Manchester United rumoured to have made a bid.
England's build up to World Cup

    30 May: v Peru, Wembley

2 June: Deadline for final squad to be named

4 June: v Ecuador, Miami, USA

7 June: v Honduras, Miami, USA

14 June: v Italy, World Cup, Manaus

19 June: v Uruguay, World Cup, Sao Paulo

24 June: v Costa Rica, World Cup, Belo Horizonte

Hodgson does have other previous injury doubts available for the Wembley outing, with defenders Phil Jagielka (hamstring) and Phil Jones (shoulder) and midfielder Jack Wilshere (foot) all in contention to face Peru.

England will travel to Miami after Friday's match, where they will play further warm-up games against Ecuador and Honduras.

"This game is a little bit strange," said Hodgson. "We have done so much focusing on so many things we wanted to establish for when we go to Miami next week and the real countdown for our matches in Brazil begins, that this game suddenly seems to have come out of nowhere.

"When you are normally with England, you spend all of your time preparing for the opponent, you talk a lot about them and how you are going to play against them.

"I must admit that on this occasion our work has been much more focused on June 14, but it is a game we are looking forward to and certainly one we are going to take very seriously.

"We are desperate to leave England having left behind a good impression for our fans."

England will open their World Cup campaign against Italy in the Brazilian city of Manaus on 14 June and will also face Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D.

Peru manager Pablo Bengoechea insists there will be no unknown quantities in the England side.

He said: "We are very much aware of all England's young players.

"In South America there is coverage of the Premier League during the week and certainly every weekend so we are very much aware of those players."

What I know about Peruvian football:

... they have a team called Deportivo ****a.

    - Deportivo of course is Spanish for "Sport" (or something like that) - and ****a is named after the ****a Indians that used to live in the region... they would still be there- but being ****as they had little sperm left to fertilise the women.

    That's about all.

Doesn't look that bad for you apart from having a ****ty right back and an even worse striker playing out of position on the wing.

Im sure Welbeck gave an interview recently saying he hates being on the wing for Utd. Should deffo be Sterling there

Exchange Sterling for Welbeck, as most sane people would want, and then you'd have possibly our strongest line-up. <ok>

Having said that, I'd rather have the option of bringing on Raheem than Welbeck . . .

I'm still not sure how Welbeck managed to get into the England squad. Are we that desperate for forwards. Man U had a **** season and Welbeck had an even ****er season.

I think he's lucky Walcott and Rodriguez are injured.

Woy pretty much just confirmed Lambert is a Liverpool player in his interview.
