Also happened with the sale of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, unless I am very much mistaken.

Sometimes just to obfuscate the fee that was actually paid. If you were paying 6m for Lambert, that might ruffle some feathers. But suppose you pay "4m plus 2m for WC appearance or 2 appearances at Liverpool." Then you are still paying the same 6m. Only now it gets reported as "4m + add on" and everyone thinks "4m... not a bad deal."

Right, this is my new task for the day. I will come up with catchy names for you. First suggestion: Boruyama.

I don't think she cares too much about what they do just so long as they don't sell Morgan.

It is a good move for Rickie but not for us. No way we can replace him for 4m. I'm not sure we can for 9m either. We spent more than that on Dani. Players leaving should only go for prices where we can pick up a replacement for the fee. If Rickie is the only one to leave then well be ok but I really think this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Am I the only one that thinks the timing of this is suspicious.
The lambert deal to finalise the day after the season ticket renewal deadline?
Maybe they wanted this kept hushed until peoples money was in?

Yeah I get that part. But I'm struggling to get my head round the fact that whether he plays for England or not has any bearing on our 2 clubs add ons? Surely The Liverpool board won't include international games in a domestic deal? The add on's are more than likely along the lines of if Lambert scores 5 goals in his first season we'll add an extra million making it 5mil (just an example).

Even if they do it on Football Manager as someone suggested earlier <laugh>
Can't comment on that as I don't play the game!

It wasnt a serious comment about the England appearances. Generally i figure those are added to the contracts of young players who have not yet achieved their full potential.
It was a remark simply because this is happening just before the World Cup.

Add-ons are okay, but may not amount to much if he isn't played much. At that price, he is just a reasonable back up. Remember that Wenger kept Walcott's time on the pitch to just below the time that would incur costs to us.

From what I've seen online, Saints all-time top scorers...

    1. Mick Channon - 227 goals - (1965-1977 and 1979-1982)
    2. Matt Le Tissier - 209 goals - (1986-2002)
    3. Terry Paine - 187 goals - (1957-1974)
    4. Ron Davies - 153 goals - (1966-1973)
    5. Rickie Lambert - 117 goals - (2009-2014)

The add on's could include things even if he doesn't play - for example, reaching the knock out stages of the CL. Getting to a certain round of a domestic cup. So even if he doesn't play regulary you could still gain some healthy add on's.

Time will tell, but I'm sure Southampton wouldn't have let him go for £4mil with some completely unrealistic oppurtunities to gain from add on's.

As fans though, do we ever get to find out what the add on's are? As far as I know it's kept under wraps - which is frustrating, as you never know whether you actually gain any or not!!

I wonder what the odds are that the offer for Lambert from Liverpool is dependent on Lallana going to Liverpool as well, for example £2 million (on top of the £4 million) for Lambert if Lallana follows him to Liverpool... I suppose we will know in the coming weeks...!

I'm hoping Rickie's right fetlock has gone and he has a spavin (whatever that is)...not enough to stop him going to the World Cup, but enough to cancel this deal. Sorry, Rickie.

I don't know what the add-ons are, and none of us probably ever will. But in this specific case, it would make sense for us because of the convenient timing of the World Cup. If it's some kind of fake add-on that is very likely to be achieved/activated during the World Cup, that would allow us to get the money earlier so we can use it for transfers. It might make a big difference for us, the 2-3m (if it's even that) being given up a couple months earlier or later probably doesn't matter much for Liverpool.

As long as his new names don't instantly produce a sale.

I'm suddenly so much less interested in the game tonight, the World Cup in general, and even cheering on 'our' players there (for the remaining days they still are).

Appears my nice, rational streak of the past few days has deserted me somewhat.
