Great times. He lived in Bedlington for a while and as a youngish lad I couldn't believe we had this Brazilian international (though he only won 4 caps) playing for us. I could believe even less he was living in my town. It didn't last after he was hounded continuously. I don't know where the club moved him to. He did well for Newcastle. Great little piece that, tough it doesn't bode well if he couldn't breathe in Manaus!! I reckon our game with Italy could be a slow pace <laugh>

    Mirandinha nearly got me killed.

I was going out with a girl from Bramhall, who was a Manchester United fan, when we signed him. I was living and studying in Glasgow at the time and I think we were due to be playing at Old Trafford in a couple of weeks. I was straight on the phone to her to arrange going to visit her that weekend and we agreed to go to the game. You could still buy tickets on the day back then, and so the two of us went into the Stretford end, standing right behind the goals near the back. It was just as well she had her Man united top on cos twice we took the lead through Mirandinha. The first time she managed to dig her fingernails into my hand and I remembered not to jump up. When they equalised I thought that would be it, but when he scored again a few minutes later I jumped up and celebrated. If it hadn't been for some guy telling others to leave me be cos I was just a kid with my girlfriend I'm not sure what would have happened. The 80s wasn't the time to make yourself known in the wrong end of the ground! The only other thing I remember about that game was that it was refereed by the ref with a haircut like Michael Bolton.

They were great times when we were allowed to dream just a little...

What I remember was when he kicked Dave Beasant up the arse after the cup defeat v Wimbledon and sparked a rumpus.
