I'd rather have Colback and Altidore at the back tbh.

Jones is a good signing and, if Mutch arrives, it shows we're getting going ........ 2 players who'll fit straight in and better than those they replace imo.

Bardsley and Gardner were way too comfy at the club.

Signing Colback, Alonso and Vergini would be a start, but so far only Jones has put pen to paper, our end of season flourish has provided a platform, and I have a feeling that Gus knows what he wants and will deliver. This shambles of having to constantly rebuild every season time must be addressed. When things are settled and this could take some time , extending the contracts of players who are performing well is the answer and not leaving it until the last minute. The situation with Catts suggests that this is the way we are travelling, lets hope so. The most important ingredient is a long term manager, and I think Gus is just the man.

Shows how weak our squad has been, doesn't detract from the point we had two for every position. Bardo was too comfy at the club because he had no competition almost his entire Sunderland career, when he did have direct competition we had no left back so played the season there without competition. Bardo coasted though his contracts and that's exactly the sort of thing two for every position avoids. The point of my whole argument. Players with competition tend to play better and work harder because they have to.

he assumes Vergini is sufficient cover at RB, and from what I saw I think he is.

we already need too many new players yet again this transfer window, dont need to add to the list for no reason

I've been ranting across to threads why I have a problem with it, I must be doing folks head in so going to let it drop. Just read my posts from this thread and the first new signing as to why. :p I've bitched on enough <laugh>

The flaw in the argument is that a club like Sunderland won't have 4 quality defenders not playing ......... just won't happen.

The likes of Cuellar and Dossena weren't a threat to anyone's position and that was two big wages pissed away for nowt.

I think a good indication of that is the subs bench. When you look at the benches of the top 6 and the quality sitting there and can`t get onto the pitch, and then you look at ours it`s <wah>

That's not a flaw in my argument, I already accounted for that with a suggestion(it's on the Jones thread). I said if Gus wants 7 for defence the obvious thing to have done is have kept Laing as he doesn't need to be registered. Which gives us a default 8th defender. We let all our promising defenders go, no chance of youth chipping in to help out unless Congerton has plans for a young fringe defender in his youth budget
