Am disappointed that Riga has left the club as felt he did a really good job yet we cant be completely surprised because there was no instant agreement that Riga would be kept on when he agreed to be the Interim Manager in the first place As well Bob Peeters (or whoever) is just as unknown as Jose Riga so am will to give it time still before making judgement (as a lot of people could be forced to eat their words)... Of course though should RD decide that whoever the next manager is should go mid-season or at the end of next for no reason what so ever then my opinions will change
What is going on in this thread??? Looks like a lot of people have suddenly realised Duchatelet's policy on the network and managers/head coaches within that. What did you think was happening in the second half of last season?
We stumbled on a manager who found a formula to scramble us to safety. We stumbled upon a player who the previous manager refused to pick, but who turned out to be different class at Championship level. The first has just been fired. The second is out of contract & highly unlikely to stay. Hope that answers yet another of your rhetorical questions.
Not really. Powell was a con artist who was leading us by the nose back into Div 3. Witness his last two games in charge. The Emperor had no clothes. Just a cloth cap. More interested in tunnel jumps and cross bar swings than picking talent under his nose (Poyet). Riga rescued us & deserved better. P.S: West Ham mate of mine said to me yesterday, "if Powell is so highly rated, I don't see many clubs asking for his services"
Several clubs have asked for his services to be fair. But he's also made it known he's completing a few courses first, and not having an agent makes it very difficult to contact someone who doesn't wish to be. But yeah, I'd rather have Riga back between the two.
Powell gave Poyet his debut and then kept him in the side. Maybe it could have been earlier (and I've said before why I think he didn't, because he saw no reason to break up the Stephens/Cousins partnership) but to say Powell refused to pick Poyet is outright rubbish. That's not to say I'm not a bit disappointed Riga's gone though.
No, its a fact. Poyet was on our books from summer 2013, and Powell refused to pick him for the first half of the season.
powell didnt pick him because he was 17, never played a competitive game, we had 8 central midfielders on the books and had a chairman who basically told him who to pick prior to this. and then guess what... he picked him. he recognised he was better than the 7 left after stephens left.
Up until Stephens leaving the Stephens/Cousins partnership was the main bright spark in our season so I see no real need to have given Poyet his debut until he did. What Powell could have worked harder to do was both get him out on loan for the first half of the season. I would assume that the blame for allowing his contract to run down could be layed at several peoples door
It is different. When Dowie, Pardew and Parkinson brought in players, in most cases we shared their hope that they would improve the team. Most times they didn't, but we usually allowed them all a honeymoon period to prove themselves. The (usually) false hopes kept us supporting Charlton. This time every time it is announced that a player has been brought in from the network there will a collective groan, because: (1) We will know they are only coming here because they have failed elsewhere, and (2) If by some miracle they do well they will soon be sold or shipped off to play for Standard Leige
