I've always liked the look of this lad.

Premier League champions Manchester City are weighing up an offer for Stoke centre-back Ryan Shawcross, with Newcastle United also expressing interesting, according to reports.

Shawcross was voted as the club’s player-of-the-year for last season after another successful campaign, this time under new manager Mark Hughes.

The club do not want to sell the player but there is a reported fee of £12million for the 26-year-old, an offer that would be difficult for Stoke and Hughes to ignore.

No official bid has been made by either club as of yet.

City are looking to increase the amount of 'home-grown' players in their squad despite reports that they are preparing to sell a series of English players such as Micah Richards, Jack Rodwell, Gareth Barry, Scott Sinclair and Joleon Lescott.

Shawcross joined Stoke from Manchester United in 2008 and has since played nearly 250 league games for the club.

The defender played every minute of all but two games last season, scoring once and keeping nine clean sheets in the games he featured in.

Just what we need for me.

Strong, powerful, committed, a very good leader that is also great in the air. A good couple of notches up from both Williamson and Taylor.

He'd compliment Colo and/or MYM very well.

Can't see Stoke selling for anything less than 12m though which probably rules us out.

For the money this would be a good signing. But I cannot see us forking that much out!

Great center half, I'd prefer we pay less and get someone who will be as good/better Harry Maguire or Jamaal Lascelles.

Be a great signing but we won't pay that. An ambitious club could get a hardcore of English talent to mould their squad around with the talent on the move this summer.

Would love us to show be that club mind. Defensively, if a club was to go and get Caulker, Shawcross and Richards I don't think they'd go far wrong. That would be three parts of a very solid and powerful back 4. Maybe look to a Cresswell type if you needed a left back. In midfield with rumoured moves abound for Milner, Rodwell, Shelvey, Delph, Colback, there are some good players on the move there too. In wide areas and attack you have the likes of Lennon, Ince, Redmond, Townsend, F Campbell, Zaha, Beharino linked with moves.

Then of course you have the more experienced types like Lescott and Barry.

I have to say though, if I could get anything I'd happily have those three defenders. Great ages too.

    -----------------McCarthy---------------------
    Richards---Caulker---Shawcross---????????
    ------------------Rodwell---------------------
    -------------Milner---Shelvey----------------
    Ince------------???????-------------????????

Fill the gaps with a bit foreign talent/flair I reckon you have a cracking team.

Shawcross is a good defender, proven in the premiership, who has his best years ahead of him. A very good signing for me. Will not happen, we'll sign the mostly unknown Riyanne Shaucrousse instead for £2.50 and a chocolate hobnob from Frogs United instead.
