Just seen that the U's have done it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27360422 A few stats - U's possession 34%, shots on goal - 8 (just under half of what Gateshead achieved), but amazingly 7 were on target!!!
Happen to Be in central London this afternoon, driving past baker st tube there were plenty of u's fans in the pubs there pre-game Well done Luton and Cambridge back in the league!
What a fantastic day for Cambridge United back in the Football League after 9 years of hurt! I was at Wembley supporting them but I just couldnt bring myself to chant "YELLAS! YELLAS! YELLAS!" A nervy end to an exciting game and next season is all set up for a host of local derbies. Cambridge will play Northampton, Southend, Luton, Stevenage and Oxford which will be great for the fans plus the added attraction of playing Pompey! Although Ipswich is my club I will always have affection for Cambridge as I have there for 25 Years! A smashing football club, great fans and at long last a Football League club once again! Oh and Dyke... Just keep your dirty Fooking hands off the current structure of League Football because if you were ever to get your way, special days like these will become a distant memory!
Probably the closest I've ever come to a second team...particularly when I was a kid - although I must say haven't really kept recently... Great stuff...
As it was easier to get to, I took it upon myself to sometimes watch Peterborough Utd when I lived in Cambs, I just cannot get happy for Cambridge Utd, with their horrible little ground and poor access. The City itself is okay, but I never liked going to the 'Abbey'.
On a separate note I hope you and yours are safe out there Thai as I've been hearing on the News about the civil unrest going on!
Yup, martial law imposed and the country in crisis! Not a problem where we are, safely tucked away in the north east 'tis a mess and one I hope they can resolve sooner rather than later, though that is unlikely as Thailand is always in a political mess
I was living in and around Huntingdon, so Cambridge was never easy to get to, let alone the ground but Peterborough was so much easier, which was a real + (I did not have a car back then) At the time, London Road was not great by any means although it has improved with a new stand down one side, and another new one is going up at the 'away end' now, but as ii was covered in all areas of the ground, it was better (imo)
Don't know how long ago since you were last at the Abbey but it has improved a great deal in the last ten years! They have built a brand new stand for the Away supporters at the far end of the ground and have made improvements all around the stadium. It's far too good for the Conference and a lot better than many clubs in a Leagues 1 & 2 for that matter! Crawley Town's stadium for example is a complete **** tip compared to the Abbey! Cambridge will make a welcome addition to the league in terms of the fan base.
hm, I guess it would have been mid to late 80's, so yes it may well have changed but I have not seen it since those days.
They were good games and a good atmosphere Not as hostile as 'our' derby but then the crowds were not even half the size.
I remember back in the late 80s when Beck was the manager and they had the likes of Dion Dublin and Steve Claridge playing for them. It's hard to believe that they were within 90 minutes of reaching then newly formed Premier League! Since then it's all gone pear shaped big time and the club has been on the brink of going bust many times since 2005. Peterborough at the same time have been doing relatively better so it would be great to see a proper Cambridgeshire derby match again.
