Even the divorce payment's relative. How the **** do you lose all that? http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristol-City-goalkeeper-David-James-declares/story-21104781-detail/story.html Former England goalkeeper David James has declared himself bankrupt. Mr James is thought to have earned around £20 million during his 25-year career. The Sun reports that he built up debts after a £3 million divorce from wife Tanya in 2005. Mr James, who won 53 England caps, played for Watford, Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth before joining Bristol City on what was believed to be a £20,000 a week deal.
That's odd. As he's one of a rare breed - i.e. a footballer with a brain - he's the last person I expected that to happen to.
Yeah precisely. He really does seem quite intelligent and not the usual ****er type. The one thing that really pisses me off with footballers is the amount of spare time they waste. They normally work for 4 hours a day including lunch together, so why dont they do something good with the rest of their time? When they say they take up gambling or drinking cos they're bored it drives me ****ing insane - do a degree, learn a foreigh language - anything. So I liked Jameo cos he paints and puts on art exhibitions. Back to the OP - so how the frig did he lose it all? He must earn a decent wedge from BT Sport at present as well.
So what is it then , gambling ? How do you blow £20 million ? Always thought he was a decent bloke , he was writing newspaper articles and donating the money to charity
Same here in Aust. An AFL footballer who earned $30m in his 15 year career was bankrupt at the end of his career because he couldn't go past putting 20grand on the nose of a sure bet at the track. When it came in 6th he thought whoops that was a mistake. Dickheads the lot of them who blow their wealth on the horses
Very surprising since he's still doing some punditry work. Always respected footballers who invested in stuff to keep them going after they've retired. Loads of people call Beckham a moron, but I think he's an absolute genius in reality.
I'm surprised that he hasn't done it sooner, he has had real problems and he isn't the only one. Four or five well known players will follow him, all linked to one club at some point.
And now he'll be hurting watching his ex live the good life off money he earned whilst he hasn't 2 bob to scratch his arse with
Did anyone hear him on Talksport this morning....When the reporter started the discussion by asking him about been made a bankrupt he very nearly hit the roof. he kept his calm and asked him to talk about the reason he was on the programme : The FA Cup final. Finished by saying he was predicting CITY 2-1 Arsenal....Top man
Wasn't he involved in running an Art Gallery or something? I wonder if that might have something to do with it e.g. failed business etc?
Care to elaborate? What problems? I can guess you means Pompey, but what's the problem behind these players?!
i think there's a problem with some in that they're never in a standard "growing up" world. they come from school into a world where many are still the teenage lads they always were. the money comes too easy. the clubs should be putting some of their salaries away with the pfa or someone for that almost inevitable rainy day.
Exactly, it is all well a good calling the guy, unless you know the facts then difficult to say why, but sometime a business venture just doesn't work out.
