James played 53 times for England

James, 43, earned around £20m in a 25-year career in which he played for Premier League sides Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

The keeper notched up 536 games in the top tier - the third highest appearances of any player - and was capped 53 times by England.

However, it is understood he declared himself bankrupt after building up debts following a costly £3m divorce from wife Tanya in 2005.

The ruling was made official at Hertford County Court last Friday after he filed a debtor’s petition, according to The Sun.

He will be automatically discharged from bankruptcy within 12 months, according to official documents.

It is understood that Tanya demanded a share of his future earnings. His assets at the time were thought to be around £6m and the couple earned seven properties.

He is currently working as a coach at Luton Town - the club that Welwyn Garden City-born James supported as a boy.

The dad-of-four is working voluntarily with the club as he works towards his coaching licence.

James has four children with his ex-wife Tanya but he currently lives in Devon with his new partner, ex-school friend Amanda Salmon.

Nine years ago he set up the David James Foundation after visiting the south east African nation of Malawi to help raise awareness about AIDS.

The foundation helps farmers to develop better techniques and gives teenagers skills needed to find work in Malawi.

Art lover James also writes a regular column for the Observer newspaper, donating his fee to charity.

A spokesman for James was not available for comment last night.

Unbelievable, £20 plus million, gone, good bloke as well..

It is a shame as he was/is a decent bloke. Not the best keeper for us but certainly not the worst. Hope he can sort himself out sooner rather than later!

Nice bloke, not a great keeper for us but I always think he was a good player to have around for the youngsters especially with his international experience

Don't know why people are surprised about David James going bankrupt. He was never any good at saving

So he earned £20m, bought 7 properties (worth ??) and spent £3m on a divorce....

Am I the only one thinking where did the rest of it go ?

Diddums, great bloke, but anyone who earns over £1 million in a matter of months and doesn't make it work for them, isn't bright enough to be well off for the rest of their life. Shame, as I thought he was more sensible than that.

This is as much an issue of women getting something they don't deserve as much as anything. Why footballers wives aren't exempt from usual divorce settlements is beyond me. The majority of them pump out a few kids and reap the rewards of over inflated salaries their partner brings home.

I swear Colleen is just waiting for the right moment for Wayne to hit his absolute highest peak of anything he will ever earn, and then take him for everything she can. Even with him being a complete t*@t, she doesn't deserve a penny!

clearly he could sell his assets and then he wouldn't be bankrupt. But this way he doesn't have to pay the wife her divorce settlement.

I'd be less offended of someone falsely accused me of being a sex offender than someone falsely accusing me of being jealous of that apocolyptic oaf! We live in a strange world though, some women think Katie Price is a good mum and a role model to all women. So if you envy Wayne Rooney and don't think he is a t*@t, it doesn't shock me especially, just makes you a standard Manchester United fan on some level.

Man Utd fair enough, but Wayne Rooney? I see no grounds as to why... Either on a football level or human level.

Strange how when he wrote for the Observer or other papers it always said at the end
of his article that he had accepted no fee and had donated it to charity!?
