The Argentinian endured a nightmare start to his loan at the Stadium of Light being panned by pundits and fans alike.

But he's won over Poyet and the Mackem crowd by playing out of position at right back.

And now the Black Cats chief is ready to seal a deal with Estudiantes.

Poyet said: "Vergini pleases me a lot for different reasons. Firstly because I brought him here and I know him both as a player and as a person and know how important it was for him to succeed in England.

"He was playing out of position so it is even more impressive what he has done."

Vergini, 25, made his full Sunderland debut in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal and after the 5-1 thrashing against Tottenham, Sky pundit Jamie Carragher claimed he was one of the worst centre halves he'd seen.

But he's undergone a stunning transformation since switching roles.
“It will be nice to sit down with him and have a good chat about the future”
    Gus Poyet
Poyet added: "When I needed a right back when Phil Bardsley was suspended, he was the only option.

"It was almost unfair on him because if he had played badly, it might have killed him.

"But he didn't and you have to give him enormous credit.

"It will be nice to sit down with him and have a good chat about the future."

Obviously until he actually put pen to paper it`s still just talk but good news if he does.

He is quite easily beaten by pace which is a worry and he is by no means the best defender we have. If we are to move on realistically I don't see him starting. I do like him, great with the ball, has a great last ditch tackle but watching the Swansea game he was beaten too easily.

He is not a RB, playing in the centre of defence, where positional sense is more important imo, he wouldnt be getting skinned by wingers.

What we need is a CB with a bit of pace about them to partner vergini in the centre

Good news, he is only young and looks like he could become a very good player. Most players take time to settle in when coming from south america. This lad got bought into a relegation scrap and although dodgy at first come good in the end. With a pre season under his belt he could be fantastic for us. Only 24 which is young for a CB.

I like him, but it will be some time before we see the best of him, strangely we say this about a lot of South American players, but not all take time to settle, Julio Arca springs to mind, and of course their have been others like Claudio Marrangoni who were never allowed time to adjust, what a mistake that was, it would be great if we had him now with Gus in charge.

I thought he was a free agent having bought out the remainder of his contract at estudiabtes.

If it was he or bardsley id take Vergini. Fraction of the wage I imagine and a better footballer. Id also try and bring in another right back and have vergini as competition for a starting spot.

I knew wed moved on quality wise when Dean Whitehead finally left, I think ill feel the same when bardsley departs.

Happy to have him, but I want him as CB not FB, yes he did well in his time at FB but folk must have seen that we lack width on the right hand side when he plays there. The stint at fb has done him good, it's allowed him game time in a position where he's a bit more protected so he can relax a bit more and play his game but he ain't no rb. Going to be a cracking CB though.

Looks cultured and comfortable on the ball we need him to take over from JOS and WB during next season

And I thought it was just people on here who made judgements on players after watching 2 games <laugh>
