Chelsea have confirmed that Andre Villas-Boas is their new manager. The Portuguese coach signed a three-year deal at Stamford Bridge after resigning as manager of Porto yesterday. The 33-year-old - touted as the new Jose Mourinho - held talks with the Blues after their agreed to pay £13.2 million in compensation to his former club. A Chelsea statement said: âChelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that Andre Villas-Boas will be the clubâs new manager. âHe has signed a three-year contract and will start work immediately. âAndre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time. His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident Andreâs leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions. âAndre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years. He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him.â Villas-Boas worked for the Blues during Mourinho's tenure. He moved with his mentor to Inter Milan, before leaving in 2009 to begin his own management career.
Agree with you Sheriff out with those ponderous players who slow us down and in with some young hungry players with pace and work ethic (I hope)
Hey, Chav fans! You know what's going to be really interest about this three year appointment of your new manager? How much of it he actually gets through before your mad Russian takes a disliking to him and sacks him. Clearly, he's never going to last the whole three years - they never do at your gaff. So the real question is, will he make it to the end of the season before getting sacked, or will be be sacked before Christmas? Now that it's clear that you won't be poaching Modric off us and you're going to be stuck with old Frankie-boy, your chances of dominating teams such as us, United, Arsenal, City and 'Pool are greatly reduced, so I strongly suspect that you are going to struggle next season, certainly domestically. Now, we all know that the mad Russian wants to win everything in sight, but particularly the PL title, so I strongly suspect that your new boy won't even make it to the New Year. Shame, because he looks like a nice bloke. Still, if you sell your soul to the Devil, you've got to expect
Oh right. Redknapp two years and counting. nob before redknapp - 6 months Jol - 2.5 years? Hoddle - 2 years Was it George Graham in between Hoddle and Jol? 1 year... So then...how intact is your glass house now? As for Modric...let's just wait and see...
Oh, come off it! Are you seriously trying big-up your managerial record by trying to belittle ours? Ours is bad, I won't ever deny that, but yours under the mad Russian is absolutely atrocious!
What makes me laugh is that you've people saying "give the lad time to build a team" but we all know that the mad Russian isn't interested in two or three seasons' time; he wants everything now, and if he doesn't get it, he fires the manager and brings in the next man. What I absolutely love, though, is that he probably has, at most, another two or three sackings left in him before the world's managers tell him where to stick his money and his job. I'm going to love it when that day comes, and you are faced with the indignity of even managers like Mick MaCarthy telling the Russian to sling his hook
That will never happen, look at Madrid. As long as the chance to win trophies and good money is on the table, there will always be someone ready to take the job. Jesus we heard all this after Jose left and we've managed to bring in some pretty big names since. You can cheep till the cows come home but Roman's Chelsea is here to stay, get over it.
Also, I don't agree with everything Roman has done in his time with us but when you've invested and continue to invest hundreds of millions, that gives you the right to do pretty much what you like. If a manager can't accept that level of expectation and pressure, don't come.
Exactly, Capello was sacked just after winning the League with Real, and since they haven't had a manager that had served over a season since Del Bosque in 1999, that hasn't stopped them finding top managers. RA isn't going anywhere so dry your eyes and accept it
It's amazing what £5m a year will do to someones reluctance to take a job managing one of the top teams in the country, and even europe, espescially as there will be a pay off of at least 1 years salary if the get the sack. I would say that it would be non existent!
What's obvious is that, by and large (and certainly at the top of the table), teams finish in the same ranking as the clubs' respective average annual wage bills. Given that we fall way behind both Chelsea and Arsenal, we would have to be punching seriously above our weight to finish above either or you. The fact that we are beginning to put ourselves in contention is a testament to the confidence that Harry has instilled in the club and in our squad. You lot can scoff all you like, I am thoroughly proud off what my team has achieved. We don't expect to finish in the top 4, so that when we do it's a real treat for us. You can never know what bliss is, until you learn to accept disappointment as your closest friend.
White hot "You lot can scoff all you like, I am thoroughly proud off what my team has achieved. We don't expect to finish in the top 4, so that when we do it's a real treat for us." That's alright then eh....everybodies 'appy
I personally think it could be a good appointment, he's been learning the coaching aspect since he was 17 years old and Mourinho obviously rated him enought to have him at Porto, Chelsea and Inter. Since he has risen to manager he appears to have done quite well. If he can come in and just get the players working well together again, that'd be enough I reckon. Plenty of talent at The Bridge, just needs someone who can get the best out of them.
I think Chelsea fans (least those over about 25) have had a fair bit of disappointment down the years...hence we have every right to be loving it at the moment. Every dog has their day. I don't think i've been looking forward to a new season as much since Jose's first year. Hungry young new manager, fresh faces coming in and a fully rested Torres...Bring it on.
Spot on. I have supported Chelsea for 30 years and it's been more disappointment than joy so the success of the last few years has been all the sweeter. As for the bitter Spud, who knows what Roman is thinking and if he has decided to change his ethos and give someone some time to rebuild a squad (surely SOMEONE has told him that would be the best idea). He has certainly taken a very different approach in appointing a very young and pretty untested manager instead of going for someone nearer the end of their career .
