After seeing Englandâs under 21âs crash out of the European Championships at the weekend, I was waiting for an article such as this. Content is pretty accurate Iâd say in relation to the heart of English players these days and canât really argue with the fact that the money involved in England now is making club football preference. A point that will continue to rumble on until our national team finds successâ¦â¦â¦.so this point will rumble on for an awfully long time! Article below: http://sportales.com/soccer/england-ruined-by-england/
do you mean ruining our national side? of course it is! We have foreign strikers , midfielders and defenders dominationg most of the first-team squads. Most of our national first team strikers are second or third picks for their club sides. Are our academies bringing up enough quality , home-growm talent to re-introduce later? I don't know. The Champions league is also destroying the national team importance, pride, desire ad relevance . IMO. You can hardly stop the imports now, so you have to go back to grass roots, invest in best coaches and facilities and get those english talents nurtured and progressed into the top stratum. Chances of that investment and care from the FA? Who Knows? I think Geoff Hurst said the other day that Eng will never win a trophy in his life time....nor mine, nor yours nor our kids.
I think the bankers are more to blame than the PL for the state of ruin that we find ourselves in, but I see your point. Isn't Brooking meant to be in some sort of grass-roots development role? I know results won't be immediate but it would be interesting to see what targets he has been set and how he thinks he is doing.
To be fair since '66 we have generally been pretty dire. The Premiership has brought a ton of money into the game which should have been used to improve our coaches and our young players. Instead it has become a system that has flooded the game with foreign players and the huge sums are going into the pockest of players and agents. As things stand the only thing that is is different is that instead of having a large pool of players who cannot compete at the increasingly high level international football demands we have a small one. Until controls are put on the number offoreign players and the huge sums generated by the Premiership are used properly, as well as a strategy to find, improve and actually give jobs to young English players is in place, we will grdually decline even further.
The very same rules that permit the foreign palyers to come here, allow English palyers to play in Spain, Germany, France etc so I can't see why this should have any sort of one-sided effect on our national team. Even if the law allowed a limit on foreign players it is difficult to see why England team members would improve by playing more often in a much lower quality competition. I think the issue is at grass roots where we value workrate too high and don't value skill enough. This is also true amongst fans in the premiership and has been for years. Eg even at Spurs, Hoddle was thought of by many as a luxury player whereas Monaco buit a team around him.
Any game of lower standard grass roots football revolves around the tactic of lumping it upfield, rather than learning to pass the ball. I'm pretty sure schools up and down the country still use the ethos of "He's a big unit, stick him in Central Defence"! And kids playing on full-size pitches encourages this - young players learning the game aren't taught how to hold onto a ball and pass intelligently.
then it is even worse than most of us realise.!! if the coaches from 5 upwards are still immersed in hoof-it football, cannot aspire to the control of teams like the spanish, skills that almost all other countries aspire to, we will continue to wear the emperor's clothes. Is not everyone getting totally fed up with the hoo-ha every two years as we qualify (or do not) for a championship and then play about as well as algeria or usa or bognor regis. Why do we any longer expect to succeeed. We play like sunday pub teams mostly. Our manager wants us to take red bull cos we are always knackerd. These overpaid , arrogant and incompetent footballers are the best we have? Well, blame them and their money and their complacency, but blame the "badged" coaches. Who taught them? Coaches from even older generations? Wimbledon fc coaches? badges from the scouts? If we realise that club football is dominated by foreign coaches (at the highest level) , then it is for a very good reason. THEY ARE BETTER,, and better trained. So maybe we should start importing their coaches to train our coaches to train our youth.? Then our boys become men and go back and beat them whence they came. Winston Churchill eat your heart out.
this seems to be some unique kind of english malaise. we invent all sorts of stuff, sit on our smug arses while the rest catch up, overtake us and we do sweet f.a. then it's all shock horror when we can't beat algeria or switzerland or hackney marshes. we did this with football, tennis, cricket (bit of a comeback there, though), transport systems, housing, welfare, nhs etc etc. we are stuck in colonialist mindset that we are superior to the rest of the effing planet. so when it comes to our beloved sport, we have geriatric , incontinent, acknowledgedly corrupt zimmer-merchants refusing to let in goal-line technology, video views, and vuvuzelas. We sit idly by and wonder why these tossers can trouser money, give the world cup to an arabian desert in the middle of summer and lie about academies and we get toilet-roll factory owner trev acting as their mouthpiece, telling us that the future is rosy. BOLLOCKS, TREV. A commission needs to be started now, sending emissaries out to all parts of the world. learn from those doing better than we are. Admit thta we are lagging behind. Bring bacl people and ideas and methods and teach them to our youngsters. stop whingeing in the press, build-up a realistic national value of our world position in the game, stop paying these prima donnas a million pounds a second. The fa needs to stop licking butt and stand tall in front of fifa. Do not try to get the world cup for a while. put those millions into our game here. limit foreign players in the premiership per first team. bring on goal line and video technology. if i see one more mendes "goal" disallowed i will throw my remote at the screen. the whole shebang is crippled, stinks and is creaking at the seams. can we do more as fans???? dunno. we should fight them on the beaches. and cheryl cole remains a media-whore.
and finally.... as if the gods of grumble-town want me to be proved right, i turn on the tennis to watch the dour scot and they flash a clip of heather watson, the new british female tennis hope. WHEN HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER IN 2011 WITH A BEER GUT/MUFFINTOP/SPARE TYRE - AT THE AGE OF 19 OR SO.???? jesus. there is the proof. her professional coach and her team and herself think that flopping your gut around is on a par with the professional and scientific training of the other ladies from the other nations. if she is pregnant, then i apologise wholeheartedly. same syndrome...it's is ok to be second rate, out of shape...but then pleaes do not expect to ever win. ...and she duly loses and the commentator says " aaaah, she tried sooo hard, she did her best. you can't knock her..." OF COURSE YOU CAN. SHE IS TOO FAT AND OUT OF SHAPE AND POORLY PREPARED.. AAAAAAAAAAAARGH. i'll get my coat,,,,,,
When Spain had a lot of Imported players in the 60's thier National team suffered, and it took along time to recover. With all the foreign players coming in our young players are'nt getting into 1st team squads,as Managers can buy players cheaply from abroad who have gained experience from getting into thier squads. When we do get a good one come through, look ho much clubs have to pay for them!.
Young foreign players come here, but how may English go abroad! Look at the prices of the latest crop of youg English Carroll 35m Jones 16.5m Henderson 18m I feel English players do not experience the different styles of foriegn football until they're faced with it in the PL/CL or EL. They just get bogged down with reserve football and loans to lower leagues. We're miles behind in technical ability and tactical awareness, a sad state for the country who invented the game. Unfortunately, our game is run by too many old farts who've never kicked a ball in their life. We also heap so much expectation (god knows why with our track record!) on our national team its ridiculous, its almost a demand. England do not relax and play with freedom, fearing failure and a hard time from the media, knowing any mistake could be detrimental to their careers.
Paul Scholes would've missed half the season in most other countries. Dirty little ginger hatchet man. You have to wonder about the mentality of some of the coaching in this country, though. Would Modric have made it through the youth system here? Shaun Wright-Philips was let go by Forest because he was too short, for example.
Agreed about Scholes - both with Luke - he is a skilful player - but particularly with PNP. I don't think I've ever seen a match where he didn't commit two or three yellow card offences (mostly horrendously mistimed tackles) but somehow he usually got away with them
