And now for some good news:

Asked if he would stay at United, Coloccini said: “For sure. I’m going to be here.”

Coloccini asked to leave Newcastle in January last year and return to his native Argentina, where San Lorenzo were keen to sign him, because of what Pardew described at the time as a “personal issue”.

But the defender agreed to stay on after talks with the his manager and the club.

And Coloccini has now reiterated his commitment to United after coming through a “difficult” period off the pitch.

“I had personal problems,” said Coloccini. “Sometimes it’s tough. You have to decide between the problems and the work.

“Sometimes it’s too difficult. Now it’s finished, and next season I will be here. I’m looking forward to improving.

“We want the best for Newcastle United.

“This season we finished top 10, and maybe we will bring some players (in the summer).

“We will try to do well and finish in the top eight, or something like that. We will always try to improve.”

    I'm very happy with that.
He's a leader on and off the pitch.
    Some rare good news.
The glow is starting to build.....

Great news, but I'll only be happy if he's still here once we get to September.

I dont believe a single word of this. Not Colo, but the report itself.

I just dont believe he would say the things in the article especially when there is so much uncertainty regarding the management and playing staff levels UNLESS:

He knows something we dont. He had this dinner with MA didnt he so maybe there has been something mentioned about the manager replacement and investment?

Colo is good but very over rated by our fan base IMO.

He's far from the quickest and pretty poor in the air, two attributes which are needed to be a top, top defender in the premier league. He does read the game well and is top notch at bringing the ball out from the back which helps us relieve pressure against the better teams and start attacks against the poorer sides.

Would still like to see a no nonsense defender to partner him and a mobile one at that. Colo is getting on a bit now and will miss 5-12 games every season IMO so CB really is another area that needs proper strengthening.

I have to laugh at these overrated comments. Perhaps he isn't quite the defender he was two years ago, but it's not like we've got anything better is it? Yanga-Mbiwa never gets a game, Williamson is a clogger, and Saylor's f**king ****.

We have to face facts: we're not going to get the 'complete' defender. If we somehow do, and he's THAT good, he'll f**k off to a bigger club within a year. Colo is as good a defender as we could hope for. He's been tremendous for us.

I look at Kompany. Is he the player he was two years ago? Certainly not. Would Man City fans want him replaced? I very much doubt it.

If he is still here come next season I would definitely start him with Yanga-Mbiwa and ensure in our friendlies we start blooding some of our younger players like Remy Streete and Curtis Good ( fitness allowing )

Great news. Actually its better than that. I rate Colo very highly, he has a thankless task trying to work alongside a very average set of defenders. Add in Krul is not very commanding and has become error prone, his job sticking it all together is pretty tough.

    Realistically:

Willo - Ok as a 4th choice defender but lets not pretend he has become some world beater. None of the top 12-13 clubs in the PL would pick him on a regular basis.
Mbiwa and Saylor - One in the same. We pay these two top whack and they are rank average. Saylor is excellent in the air but his positioning and rashness get him into trouble on a regular basis. His passing is ok at best. Mbiwa is terrible in the air, positionally poor, and incredibly rash. His passing is a joke. These guys are picking up first xi money, yet neither is good enough to dislodge Willo!
Santon - Can't defend and has never been a left back however much Alan think he is. He's not.
Dummett/Haidara - Neither is very good. Dummett humps it long all the time, and has started to get caught out postionally. Haidara is a trier. However he is caught out regularly defensively, and while he offers more than Dummett going forward as he is quick, it often ends with him being shepherded out of play in a "open the gate" type manner.

A massive overhaul needed but the necessary won't be done. I'd sell all of the above except for Colo, Debuchy, Willo, Krul, Haidara (in the hope you can develop the raw skills).

Debuchy is the only decent defender we have alongside Colo. Willo is decent as a 4th choice for a club like us. The rest are not worth what we are paying them and therefore should be bulleted. Risky changing that many of course.

So long as we reinvested the money into a decent CB and LB I'd agree. Caulker has been mentioned a few times - could be good alongside Colo. Shame we sold Perch - he was better than Mbiwa and could have continued to fill the 'utility' role covering several positions.

I'd look at the like of Caulker, Trippier, Cresswell, maybe Maguire. All better than what we have now.

    Maguire <laugh>

Come on, he's not played any higher than league one and looks slow even at that level. I think to say he's better than what have is OTT.

This is good news. We need the skipper to show his hand for the confidence of the whole squad.
