Getting in James wouldn't be merely because he is a past hero. He's intelligent, articulate, was a fantastic goalkeeper in his day who played at the highest level of English football for years and over 50 times for England, he has great knowledge of football as a whole and has even played abroad (which is a rarity for English players), he'd command huge respect. All attributes that would be required for a successful coach. The only thing he lacks is coaching experience.
As you say, Lapras, the only thing he lacks is coaching experience. That's why I wrote what I did. Much as I like Jamo for all the reasons you cite, he is untested and would be a gamble. If David Coles is available and prepared to come then he is the obvious choice.
Well, no-one is born with experience so they have to gain that experience somewhere, it may as well be here.
Own Goal? Did you sign him from Man U? I remember him being their top scorer at one point a few seasons back. Portsmouth are among the clubs considering a move for Swindon striker Miles Storey. The 20-year-old, best known for scoring twice against Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup in October 2012, has a year left on his Swindon contract and could leave this summer. Storey made 20 appearances for Swindon last season, scoring three goals, but failed to net during loan spells at Shrewsbury and Salisbury. But it has been reported that Portsmouth are keeping a close eye on his situation in Wiltshire and could approach Swindon about landing the forward.
On Devs free transfer list I'd say Southern is worth a look for his experience - we have a young team with Shorey our eldest I think - no bad thing for a bit more experience around.....also there is a whisper about a lad at Halifax who's scored a hatful of goals...can't remember his name........Lee Gregory....just came back to me.
Are you referring to Lee Gregory, Eastney ? He has scored 62 goals in 97 games for Halifax. Big lad at 6'2", 25 years of age. Apparently both Cardiff & Leeds are looking at him, so goodness knows what he would cost !
I see that Reading are releasing winger Jobi McAnuff (aged 32). Very good player still, but wages probably too high for us. I recall that PFC almost signed him and Nigel Reo-Coker from Wimbledon some years ago when Peter Storrie was at FP. We offered them something cheeky like £70,000 for both players. They were promising teenagers then, but if the deal had gone through, wouldn't that have been the "steal" of the century.
Cheers Woop - yes.....and crumbs if we are up against them then I doubt we have a chance.....still good to know we are looking far and wide.
We've released nine players today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27341060 they are: George Branford, Ashley Harris, Jake Jervis, Yassin Moutaouakil, Marcos Painter, Therry Racon, Phil Smith, Liam Triggs and Josh Warren, but we've also decision to extend the contracts of Adam Webster and Ryan Bird. I'm dissapointed Harris didn't work out in the end because he seemed useful in the Championship and League One, I dont think Jervis, Moutaouakil, Painter, Racon or Smith's departures are that surprising, and I dont know enough about the others to comment. Webster staying was kind of obvious given how frequently he featured under Awford, and I am glad we decided to keep Bird
Good to see we have offered first-year professional contracts to academy players Ben Close and Bradley Tarbuck. Both allegedly good young prospects. With Phil Smith leaving, short of a miracle, it looks like we are "lumbered" with John Sullivan as likely reserve goalkeeper to (hopefully) Trevor Carson. Also pleased that Ryan Bird is staying - I think he could be the surprise package next season if given good service, from the flanks and midfield.
..........a utility defender.......... Non-league ace Mickey Demetriou is being lined up for a summer move to the Football League, Sky Sports understands. The 24-year-old defender is a free agent and is set to leave Kidderminster Harriers ahead of a Bosman transfer switch this summer. Demetriou joined Kidderminster from Eastbourne having been a graduate of the Glenn Hoddle Academy. Now Demetriou is poised for a move into the Football League after impressing with the Harriers over the last couple of seasons. Demetriou, who can play left-back or centre-half has clubs from League One and League Two showing a strong interest. The likes of Rotherham, Peterborough, Leyton Orient, Portsmouth and Chesterfield are all believed to be readying offers. ******************************************************************************************************** ..........and a possible Striker linked to us......... Portsmouth boss Andy Awford has confirmed the club are interested in striker Reuben Reid. The 23-year-old scored 21 times this season during a loan spell at Plymouth, including a strike against Pompey on the final day, and is now out of contract following his release by Yeovil. And Awford revealed he is keeping a close eye on the forward, telling The News: 'He's one of a number of players we are currently addressing and having a look at. 'He's not our top or bottom target, but he's a player we know about who is out of contract. We'll see. 'He did well last season for Plymouth, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him raise interest from other clubs. 'I wouldn't say he's going to walk in the door next week, but he's on the list. He is one of many players we will weigh up over the next week."
It seems that Reuben Reid has stalled a bit on his contract offer with Plymouth, apparently due to hearing of the Pompey interest. That's the word on the street at least.
I see Jamie Ashdown would be keen on a return to FP. I didn't realise he's only 33 years old, that's peak years for a goalie. 600 minutes without conceding.......... I'd be happy to see him back here. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/old-boy-keen-on-pompey-return-1-6066493
I knew he was out of contract one last season ended and I would go for him in a heartbeat. We never should have let him go in the first place.
Not sure he has forgiven Michael Appleton for that - there were a few who were prepared to stay on within the reduced budget, he was one of them. As he has spoken about it though it does sound as though there has been no approach from AA. But like you I'd have him back asap.
Come on AA, contact JA 'PDQ', so we can rid ourselves of JS Wonder if Cambridge Utd could be bribed into signing Sullivan permanently
