Guly's biggest problem (and it's evident throughout the YouTube video of him) is that even when he's on there outstripping the defence, he looks like he's not moving fast and his shots all look "stroked" rather than hammered. Neither of those perceptions are correct but I suspect it coloured people's judgment of him. I rated him very highly indeed and will be very sorry to see him go. I never quite understood the hatred from some sections of the crowd particularly given that he was always given game time by both NA and MP. Suggests there was something there that the terrace donkeys were missing. Vin
Always had a soft spot for Guly, he could delight and frustrate in seconds but has done a great job for our club. Class act.
If I am honest I have never really liked Guly. But I can still say he was part of the squad that helped us get back to the Prem and I thank him for it. Yes the Prem seemed to be too much for him in the matches he played, but he deserved a chance. I don't get fans that slag him off at matches, when for the most part he was trying his best.
Kind of agree - he was really good in the second half of League One and first half of the Championship, but since then he's only had a few good performances. He's okay to bring on and do the simple things and he does a fair bit of running, but he doesn't have too much skill or prowess in front of goal.
It all links back to that Portsmouth equaliser at Fratton Park. Guly seems like a confidence player, has that languid style you've mentioned and could be frustrating to watch as his technique could let him down. Like it or not probably just over half of our fan base watched Saints regularly in league one and the championship (TV streams not being available etc) but you can be damn sure everyone watched that Pompey game. Whether you blame him for that goal or not, the pundits did and that seemed to give licence for the boo boys to have a go at him. Since then he never really had the chance to win those fans over and he is not up to premier league standard. His goal against Bristol Rovers who parked a couple of buses at St Marys was just as important as those Jono Forte goals everyone bangs on about. I'm sure he will get a good reception at the Man Utd game even if some will be happy he is leaving. Thanks Guly
Always liked Guly. His criticism by some fans was ridiculous, and he was a big part of our rise up the leagues, and a terrific signing. Thanks Guly, and good luck.
Love the fact that my thread based solely on DTLW's video has got 5 stars. Standing on the shoulders of giants...as quoted by Newton.
Just showed that it wasn't just down to MP. Adkins had us playing a nice style as well. Mainly due to talent, but also in part to team spirit (and that was down to Nicola as well).
I've a lot of love for Guly, hope he gets a good send off, him scoring would be equally brilliant and hilarious because of the rest of the countries mystified response at the ensuing pitch invasion.
Oh certainly, but in retrospect that team we had was just preposterously better than everyone else back then. A mix of upper Championship players with many who also have been great in the Premiership. Ox, Lambert, Fonte, Lallana, Puncheon were all Premiership players in waiting! No wonder we ripped sides apart.
I never forgave him for not jumping at the far post at Fratton Park and allowing those dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty skates a point. GRRR!! Ok, I forgave him about 5 minutes after it happened. Everyone loves a Guly. I love a Guly! Bye Bye Guly!
I too wish him the best of luck!! For me he was a class act in the way he seemed to glide gracefully over the pristine surface that is St Mary's. Will be missed by me.
