My take on goalkeepers is that every professional goalkeeper is pretty good at making saves. You don't become a professional keeper without that.

Goalkeepers for rubbish teams always look amazing because they have about 15 shots to save every game! So you end up letting in 3 or 4, make 8 routine saves, and maybe pull off a worldie or two if you're lucky.

The top goalkeepers at top clubs have 5 or 6 shots to deal with, sometimes only 1 or 2, and they still pull off a worldie despite no prior warning or goal-mouth action to tune their senses. Being able to perform when you only get one bite at the cherry is the sign of a true top goalkeeper.

Marshall's a good shot stopper, but he's made to look better by his lackluster defence. I don't want to be the team to gamble on him. His distribution isn't up to the standards required for a decent PL team either.

No from me. He'd do well at a team like West Ham where making saves and lumping the ball 50+ yards is all that's required..

    No thanks.

He has conceeded more goals than any other keeper hasnt he ? if your getting 20 to 30 shots at you per game your eye is going to be in pretty quickly and your going to look better than you actually are.

He wasnt stand out in the championship and has stood out in the prem league because of the constant barrage of shots against him and nothing else .

Decent keeper but not for me.

That is exactly how i have always viewed Marshal. He is a premiership keeper though and deserves his chance of playing for a much better team than cardiff, If we should try for him then it would not be disappointing but he would not be an automatic choice with us...

Has anyone looked at the rest of his game , everyone bangs on how quick his reflexes are which granted are quick but how many goals did they concede because of incorrect positioning lack of vision ,the basic skills you'd expect a PL keeper to possess . To have conceded the amount of goals they have cannot be just down to having a crap back 4 .

Your right and i picked on that the last time there was a thread on marshal where i said he was not as good as what we have,I was jumped on as usual even by some on here but that's water off a ducks back to me...Anyway With marshal i can see potential but if ever he came with us then he has a lot of work to do with our coaching staff to improve his positioning and other aspects where our keepers are better...

I know we'd never take him back, but I'd sooner have Dorus de Vries back here. Alright, the guy was atrocious at penalties (did he ever save one for us?!), but generally, he was a decent in-game shot stopper and very good with his feet. We don't give away that many shots on goal really (especially against teams outside in the top 7, and even then, we are statistically very good at making blocks), so keepers with distribution skills are a greater priority for us. We need goalkeepers who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, and able to get themselves out of trouble when they aren't allowed to use their hands.

Obviously, making saves and commanding their area are important too, but it's easier to teach and coach a GK to command their area than it is to coach them good foot distribution.

dorus was a good keeper with us and he never deserved the abuse he got on here from some quarters, Mind you it dont matter how good you are for us when they left they would still get abuse..<laugh>

Definitely no, has no good distribution and poor positional sense. Crapdiff would expect a fortune for him. He might be a good shot stopper but he did get loads of practise. Give me Vorm anyday people forget he has been injured, he will be back to top form next season.

I like Marshall and his performances have meant that Cardiff weren't relegated by Christmas and I know most Cardiff fans agree.

I take your point on the distribution thing though, and the fact that his goal has been peppered. Think Fulham have conceded a hell of a lot more though and they have the Dutch number one.

Whatever the case Marshall has pulled off some great saves this season but we tend to go for keepers who are not only good at that but can play a bit too.

Even the kids in the Academy regardless of who or how many mistakes they make will very rarely make a speculative punt up field .Paly from the back is the mantra .Although I will correct my self by adding that there is one coach down there who seems to favour a lot of shall we say " old school coaching methods " much to the despair of watching parents .

Marshal can make it in the premiership but he needs a far better club than cardiff. Their defense is shocking and i agree that they would have been relegated before xmas without the guy...I wont dismiss his talent so lightly as some as i do think he has more to offer if he had a good goalkeeper coach.
