As people are queuing for cup final tickets 24 hours before they go on sale, I was wondering what stupid things people have done just to watch City. The daftest thing I ever tried was when an away game against Swansea was moved from a Saturday to a Friday night at about three days notice because of a royal visit. I rang Swansea City the day before the game and asked them in all seriousness if they could delay kick off until 8.00 as I would be pushing it to get there in time. They wouldn't, and as the away end was a long walk from where we parked we ended up going into the home stand bang on 7.45, then telling a steward we were from Hull, and he walked us down the touchline to the away end while the game was going on.
Near the end of the 1978/79 season City had an away match at Lincoln. We were booked on a Simon Gray coach which never turned up so instead of just going home & forgetting about it we got a taxi to Lincoln which cost us £24. When we got into Sincil Bank we found the terracing crumbling beneath our feet and as the Lincoln fans were just a metal fence away, they were picking up clumps of whatever we were standing on and lobbing them over the fence at us. We lost the game 4-2 and managed to hop aboard a "City Psycho's" double decker bus and set off home. However, someone decided to lob a can or a bottle or something out of an upstairs window - just as old bill was escorting us toward the A15. The whole bus was then "arrested" while the coppers tried to find the culprit (which they never did and after 3 hours let us off with a warning. The bus got back to Hull about midnight - happy days?!
I was away in Harrogate for the last regular game, away to Ipswich, of the 07/08 season. As we still had a chance of automatic promotion I was persuaded that my attendance at Portman Road was essential. My weekend therefore went like this: Friday - travel to Harrogate to meet up with friends. Spend Saturday with them and catch an evening train back home to Hull alone. Travel to Ipswich via Tiger Travel on Sunday morning. Return to Hull via same method after the game. Persuade coach drivers to take me back to Harrogate on their way back to the bus depot in Boroughbridge. As they knew the area I was staying in in Harrogate they actually dropped me within 10 yards of the door! Return home to Hull on Monday. We lost, by the way!
If my memory is correct we went to Forest one evening, train delayed on way back meant we missed our last connection from Doncaster. After our complaints we received a rare treat from British Rail, they provided a taxi back to Paragon station.
I once paid £600 to change a non-transferable plane ticket, so I could get to a game, after a late fixture change. I can't remember what game it was, but I obviously thought it was important at the time.
and embarrass yourself you and your mates with your treatment of him .. disgraceful what you did (assuming you were one of the people who did it , sorry if not) ... that guy is a true fan and enjoyed every minute of hull city until that tourney ,, hope your happy , not happy with beating him up and nicking his "tigers head" from his costume, 3 times you (I hope not you) pushed him down concourses and caused injury. hope whoever it is, is real proud ... ****er
I can finally add to this thread now. Was due to leave Orlando on the 20th May & arrive back on the 21st. However I managed to get a ticket for the Final after several hours on the phone & after persuading the wife it was a possible once in a lifetime experience, got her to change my ticket. Unfortunately for me it's the same flight but on the 16th. Therefore I'll be landing in Manchester on the morning of the 17th. I then have to get to London, with luggage, where I've got a hotel, so I can get showered & get to the game. Luckily for me it's a 5 o'clock kick off! I've currently got a Pink Cadillac spinning round above my head! Still I'm already starting to feel the excitement!
First time poster but have been folllowing the forum for a while. Supported City since the mid-60s, emigrated to Australia almost 25 years ago but get to matches whenever I'm back in the UK during the football season. Similar story to Brucebones, I'll be flying over for the Final though not on such a tight schedule! Leave Melbourne on Thursday, arrive in London on Friday morning and fly back on Sunday evening. As you said, a once in a lifetime experience and wouldn't want to miss out on the opportunity and the excitement. My wife and most of my friends think I'm mad except those that follow football and understand what it means. Can't wait to get on that plane!
