I was wondering chaps... is the current feeling towards Pardew and Ashley the worst it's been towards a manager and an owner in your lifetime or is it a case of social media whipping people up into a frenzy from all angles?
I remember the battle for control of NUFC in the early 90's which Surgeon Hall eventually won and the feeling back then...... and it didn't seem as bad as it is now.

I think its quite tame for both Ashley and Pardew and their getting off lightly.

Go back to the 70's and 80's, Managers like McGarry, Charlton and others had it in their face regular.
Mass demonstrations weren't unusual against the likes of Seymour, Westwood, McKeag.

Social Media is doing what, having a dig at them at best on the internet.
Its not happening where it matters at SJP with 30K, 40K or whatever fans telling them what we think and shouting 'Pardew Out' - 'Ashley Out'.
A few hundred fans can be washed over very easily as being a minority as it is.

    'Getting Away with It'.

I suppose my angle is that, back in the day.. only snippets of interviews were printed in the paper and not all read them.. also lots of small clusters of discontent may have been evident. They then joined together on Match Day.
Nowadays it Pardew farts in the wrong direction tens of thousands can immediately find out about it which can accellerate the whole process.
I think that social media has put a lot of things more firmly under the spotlight.

It's information overload. Every quote, every comment, every performance is analysed and you can go to news aggregators to find the angle you want.

But this also poses a problem - by vocalising discontent online, we are able to vent our spleen and feel 'heard'. When things were REALLY bad under the likes of Westwood and McKeag, you had no choice but to stand at the club and demand change. You had to talk to people, find groups.

The Internet is a funny thing - the assumption is it reaches a wider audience, but there has to be a willingness to find the information in the first place. How many regular NUFC posters on here? 25 or so? Out of a crowd of 50,000? And even then a good percentage of us don't get to the game.

If I wasn't bothered, or not a fan of the club, would I even be aware of the problems? Easy answer here - look at West Ham. They've unfurled banners a game or two earlier than we did, but am I remotely aware of the discontent at the club? Hell, we might know a touch more because we've been Allardyced. But I don't know if he's alienating players, I don't know if his training is flawed. I am, however, aware that more than a handful of pundits have backed him and condemned the fans. Do you think those same fans think "ah, you know what? they're right, we're overreacting". I think the Internet and Social Media has had a hugely negative impact on the lesser issues. It's interesting, because I think if it REALLY mattered, something would happen. Look at Egypt, the impact Facebook had on that area where people's lives were at stake. The London riots as well. Social media can have an impact, when it's important enough to do so. Football has and always will be a pastime, perhaps less involving now than ever because it's become so vapid and transparent. What we can see from the various comments online is that there is agreement across the board on the manager and owner, but what's happened? We had a 50k turnout vs Swansea, nobody complained or made vocal their issues, little more than a cacophany of booing which the manager believes is purely down to the scoreline.

The social media was the pink, ronnie gill and sunday sun.

We had some far worse owners, managers and teams.

The internet makes the world a far smaller place and allows us all to gang up and vent our anger.
Nowadays ****s that dont even go to the match get a say also mackems get to criticise our team without getting a slap.
In our days it was a march around the ground smash the CO OP s windows singing dix in cox out (or something like that)
We have always had knackers amongst our support but now the daft bastards who cannot spell right (bound to be an error in this) or some dick with NUFC tattooed on his massive belly get portrayed as the stereo type Geordie and we get mouth pieces becoming our self appointed leaders cos the run a fanzine or a mag.

lets be honest, we have had it a lot worse, when the leazes was about 15 steps big, crowds were right down and for you younger chaps we once had a real life pirate in charge( pirate songs were very popular) there was very little hope of things improving. We knew the board were total knobs. What i think make it seem worse than before, is that we know with a bit of ambition, fatso investing our/sky and incoming transfer money into the club we could actually do quite well
