He really shouldn't try to do statistics.... lol

Classic Pardew Blunder Exposes How Disastrous Mike Ashley Era Has Been

In a classic blunder, Alan Pardew has exposed just how disastrous the Mike Ashley era has been at Newcastle United.

The under pressure Newcastle boss has yet again been trying to spin the truth to make out this season has been a huge success despite a disastrous second half of the year.

Speaking pre-Arsenal Alan Pardew came up with a statistic that he thought would portray him, and this season, in a much better light.

He is so transparent and clearly this statistic hasn’t just come to him, rather he has searched around for some spin he could use, or more likely an unseen figure at St.James’ Park/Sports Direct has come up with it.

    Pardew said;

“In the last seven seasons Newcastle have got more than forty six (Premier League) points only once.”

The Newcastle manager obviously wanting to focus on our current points total of 46 rather than five straight defeats and only four wins in the last eighteen competitive matches.

What Pardew is saying is actually true, only in 2011/12 did NUFC get more than 46 Premier League points in the previous seven seasons, when they notched 65.

Though obviously it was pretty difficult to get more than 46 Premier League points in 2009/10 as Mike Ashley had succeeded in sending us into the Championship.

However, Pardew has inadvertently opened up a whole other can of worms because all but one of those seasons (the 2006/07 one) was under the ownership of Mike Ashley as follows

    46 2013/14 (with 3 games to play)

    41 2012/13

    65 2011/12

    46 2010/11

    00 2009/10

    34 2008/09

    43 2007/08

    43 2006/07

    I then had a thought – dangerous I know.

I wonder what was the story in the seven seasons before that, you know, before Mike Ashley rolled into town…

    58 2005/06

    44 2004/05

    56 2003/04

    69 2002/03

    71 2001/02

    51 2001/01

    52 1999/2000

Well well well, thanks to Mr.Pardew it has helped highlight just how depressing it has been under Ashley compared to what happened before he arrived.

In those seven seasons before the period Pardew mentioned, not only did we only once fail to get 46 points (when Souness attempted to destroy the club), but in the other six seasons Newcastle never failed to get less than 51 points.

Yes isn’t life great under Ashley and Pardew!

I think if you add net spend on players for each of those seasons in there too it'll tell the true story - Ashley has failed to invest.

Remember Souness inherited a Champs League outfit though - Pards inherited one that'd just come up from the championship.

I'd say if we end up on 50 pts this season that'd be alright, anything less is an embarrassment after the excellent points haul before December.

Exactly. I am failing to see the massive blunder from Pards here? He has simply stated a fact. It does expose the lack of investment and highlights where we now are as a club. Hardly groundbreaking.

To be honest The Mag has become a bit of gutter commentary of late. The constant moaning and sniping is boring. We're ****e, we don't invest any money, we're happy mid table etc etc. There is only so many ways you can spin the same commentary before it bores the bollocks off people.

At least if they could balance it out by drawing some correlation between investment and finishing postion it would at least be complete. Its just half arsed, sadly typical of this publication.

Yeah, you can't bitch about everything and lay it at Pardew's door. He's fundamentally a poor manager, but we don't have to keep banging the drum. Ashley isn't reading The Mag thinking - wow, hadn't considered that, better sack Alan.

It is a poor reflection on Ashley, but that's all. And to be honest, if you offered Mike Ashley 40 points a year for the remainder of his time as owner, he'd take it, so what's there that we don't know?

Ok, tin hat on ready for abuse, but to me this looks like Alan Pardew doing what so many people have badgered him to do and having a dig at Mike Ashley about investment. I doubt the choice of 7 years will have been an accident. He is basically telling Mike Ashley that his lack of investment does not work. I haven't changed my mind that AP needs to go because of his inability to handle the setbacks he has faced during this season, but let's not go to the other extreme. It is easy to forget in this tidal wave of blame being shoved towards Pardew just how much he has been hindered by a lack of investment and support from higher up.

I don't know if Ashley will sack Pardew or not, but I hope he does. Whether he does or not, at least this is a shot across the bows of Ashley (following on from Shola's) that investment is needed.

What's weird is you get the feeling that if Ashley heard and it and took it this way (as a shot across the boughs) that Pardew would be sacked on the spot. Headbutt an opponent, put together the worst run of results, whatever, you're ok. But disagree with Mike and you're done.

    Fcking weird.

I think AP is immune even to that - unless you count Joe Kinnear as his punishment for coming out last sumer and saying that Ashley had made mistakes too.

All these stats are meaningless in some context. You can stat any period.. 7 years.... or 4 months. You can paint the last 4 months as the worst on our history in terms of points gained... goals scored.....

    LET ME REWRITE THAT!

The last 4 months of this season have been the worst EVER in terms of points gained and goals scored in any 4 month period.
