I'd be happy to take this lad.

    http://www.clubcall.com/newcastle-united/caulker-linked-with-toon-1722670.html

Newcastle could make a move for Cardiff defender Steven Caulker, should the Bluebirds be relegated.

Caulker played in central defence in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Stoke City on Saturday, a result that did little to help Cardiff's battle to stay in the Premier League.
The Bluebirds remain in the bottom three, two points from safety, and if they are relegated back to the Championship, then Caulker is likely to head straight for the exit door, with the Magpies said to be keen.
It came as a huge surprise when Caulker left Tottenham to join Cardiff and he will not be keen on playing second tier football next season, should the worst happen.

Would love him here but I suspect other clubs will also be sniffing around him. Not worth the 10m Cardiff splashed out on him but worther anything up to 8m. Commanding CB that is good on the ball, would compliment Colo/Mbiwa very well.

This - Mbiwa and Caulker could be our defensive rock for the next 8-10 years! Won't happen though

    I'd really like Caulker.

I think we need 2 in the summer if Colo goes. I like Willo but I'd like better and I've given up on Mbiwa who has been pathetic in not only performance, but one of the ones whose head drops at first sign of trouble.

Not sure who else we could get. We need someone with a bit of experience.

That's true regarding Mbiwa, he captained Montpellier to the championship too.

Personally I'd like Fabian Schar, Harry Maguire, Inigo Martinez and Joleon Lescott.

He may have captained Montpellier, but he has shown zero leadership here. He's too thick for my liking. Makes the same errors over and over. At least with Colo you knew what the problem was. He couldn't deal with the physicality and was being beasted. He adapted. Putting a brain into Mbiwa will be a tricky operation with limited chance of success.

Agree, would be just the kind of player we need - but unlikely to ever wear a Toon shirt.

I would take Richards as he can play centre back or right Back
Wages and the fact that Ashley prefers
Us going backwards will ensure this will not happen

Richards and Caulker would be a very good starting point. Young English and hungry.

Obviously neither will happen. Best to do Caulker before the World Cup. If Hodgson is brave he'll pick him alongside Cahill. Jagielka is not the right partner for Cahill in my opinion. And he may get in anyway because Jagielka is prone to injuries. If he gets a chance I think he'll do well which will not help his value. 9m was good business. I wish we'd signed him instead of Mbiwa. Looks worth every penny of the extra 2m.

Cardiff have conceded 65 goals and would no doubt have conceded more if Marshall had not been performing miracles. I can't say I would really want any relegation fodder personally. Surely if he was that amazing Spurs would have kept him?

He wanted out as he was being told he had to wait. Kaboul, Dawson, Vertonghen, Chiriches, its a lot of comp and he wanted to play and develop. Cardiff conceding 65 goals is not really a fair way to judge him as an individual. They were always going to be relegation fodder. If you are relegation fodder you are going to concede goals. Look at Dawson at Spurs. Picked out of a poor Forest outfit. Jagielka out of a poor Sheff U. McCarthy out of a poor Wigan side. You have to look past their teammates sometimes.

Would take him in a heartbeat. PArds wants a CB that can score goals, i'm pretty sure that he has more than any player we own except gouffran...

Cardiff payed what 9 million for him? Just because they get relegated doesn't mean we could get him on the cheap. I reckon they would at least want what they payed for him. Wigan got around 13 million for McCarthy after they were relegated - there is no way we will spend 10-12 million on a CB - or indeed any player for that matter save maybe a striker or a Cabaye replacement.

Mate I don't rate Dawson - never have, never will. As for the other two they have developed under good managers in a stable enviroment - if he gets other options (which he probably will) he will look with to those things in mind. If he does go to another club and does well and some people say 'I told you so' remember there is no guarantee with the way our club is run and our joke of a manager that he would prosper here.

No I agree we won't spend that. I'm just saying I'd really like him. Particularly if we had the right manager to develop his talent. He is only 22. Each to their own on Dawson, I think he is pretty solid bar being a bit fragile.

So this is where we are as Newcastle United – linked with players in relegation teams, players we still don't believe we'll be able to sign!

Wow, if lowering expectations was a priority for Mike Ashley when he took over you've got to say he's done an incredible job.

Frankly he's done wonders on me, I couldn't care less who they sign. They'll be brought in purely based on how cheaply they can be recruited and played out of position until the manager falls out with them...

Masses of examples of good players available from relegated clubs or clubs about to be relegated, should never be sniffed at. Just got to pick the right ones. Jagielka, Young, Kaboul, Cahill, Carrick, McCarthy just a few to mention. Bit of a myth.
