12mbps on adsl is pretty good really, bear in mind on adsl the speeds are mainly dependant on the length of the telephone line. I'm fairly sure BT saying you have 2 weeks to come out of your contract is against to ofcom speeds code of practice, complain to the ombudsman and you may be able to get something worked out. I don't understand why people complain when they get a slow speed on adsl, its the same all over the country. Unfortunately the only thing you can do to actually improve it is wait for fibre or move closer to an exchange
I am on Lightstream unlimited, and I was also directly wired when I ran that speedtest, we do have a couple of ipads running wirelessly too though, so I don't know if that's why my speedtest was 'only' 53mbps, and for the record here's another fully wired speedtest that I've just done http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3452874238
I had the fibre-optic when it was rolled out then had to change back to ordinary when I moved, if you have the option to get fibre-optic get it as normal broadband in the KC area is crap , too many issues to list here
If you're in doubt about changing just compare my speed test (on broadband) to look_back_in_amber's test on fibre please log in to view this image
Fibre is the better medium with far less degradation. However it is also vastly more expensive to lay. If you have the option it's worth it.
Looks like it's rolled out on Kingswood, received a letter today. £36 (i think) for it with line rental. Not much more than what we pay now, and anything has to be an improvement! It's just a tease when you turn on the TV and see all these deals for broadband from £10 a month which we cant have
Just to ease your mind there matey, those 10 quid deals aren't what they seem, to enjoy them, you have to also add on 15ish quid for line rental. Bit of a con if you ask me, it should be included in the stated price. That tenner is usually only a time limited offer too so it ends up costing more.
Where you have the power is at the end of your contract when threatening to leave for a rival. You get the best deals then. I'm paying well under £20 for line rental and broadband with unlimited usage from haggling that way. How come you can't use other providers in the Hull area? That's just ****ish.
BT, Sky, TalkTalk etc don't want to use KC's lines. It's because they know they can't hope to take enough custom away from KC to make it worthwhile. A lot of people believe that KC can stop other providers using their network, but that simply isn't true, it wouldn't even be allowed by Ofcom. In terms of the quality of the service it doesn't matter because we've got the best network here with KC, but as you've mentioned, competition does lead to better deals for us customers.
Other providers have been able to come into the area since 1999, but they'd either have to use our lines (and make a teeny tiny profit) or they'd have to soend millions to put in their own exchanges and their own network which wouldn't see them make any kind of profit at all. They won't make that much money at all which is why customers in beverley and Withernsea are constantly coming back to KC
Yeah KC have always owned the lines in Hull, other companies are now allowed to be available in Hull but it would cost them too much to either use KC lines or put in their own that it would't be worth the little bit of money they would make. I'm fine with having KC as no provider is perfect but it's **** missing out on the Sky/Virgin deals that come with TV and Broadband
You can get tv off any isp pretty much. Also it wouldn't cost the other providers too much to use KC lines, it would cost them exactly the same as it would KC to use their lines. But they won't do it for £6/£7 per month
