I find that totally unfair, I am not the gloating sort, can clearly be seen on the match day threat for the OT game or the Anfield game. Just because I call your absolute drivel for what it is, that doesn't mean I'd be any different if we managed to win the league. Unlike you lot who for the first year of this board the answer to anything was 19, top of the league ect ect ect. Then City done you and then it was 20 20 20 Classy?
I'm not being biased but i think playing wise the best footballer to play in the premier league was Ronaldo, he was unbelievable
Totally agree and he is the only PL player to win the Ballon Do'r. He may not have had the longevity of a few others, due to leaving so young, but in terms of talent he was by far the best. Henry would get my vote for 2nd, but he was knowere near as good the young 23-24 year old Ronaldo that we had. It is frightening to think that Ronaldo has got even better since leaving. He is an unbelievable player, the most complete player I have ever seen. When you think that a player like Ronaldo has played in the PL, it really does bring into context just how dumb the people who are trying to claim Gerrard is the best are
Not really agreeing with most posters, surprisingly! A lot of posters have listed really great players and I'll not try to diminish their accomplishments specifically and (hopefully!) not generally. Gerrard wasn't the best defender. Gerrard wasn't the best striker. Gerrard, arguably, wasn't the best midfield player. However, he's the best all-round player I've ever seen. I've never seen better. He could beat people, he could score (tap ins, too, but mostly wonder goals!), he could tackle and (wow!) could he pass! I'm talking in the past tense because his box-to-box days are over and he's having to play a lot smarter now. (Again, he can do that!) I've never seen a player dominate games in the way Gerrard has. Admittedly, I could be biased. But, I pride myself in being fairly objective as a fan. I defy any one to watch his action in Istanbul and in that FA cup final and name a player more influential, in any game. In the FA cup, for example (any for 1 or 2 years you could name pretty much any game he was in -- and Zidane would agree!), he scored twice (not including a standard penalty in the shoot out), and set up two goals (one-ruled out for offside -- but look at the passes for both!). This doesn't include his tracking back, his marking, his tackling and his general work-rate. I can't explain correctly. It was his best performance, IMO. And unparalleled in the modern game. Have there been better attacking games? Yes. Better defending games? Yes. Better passing games? Yes. Better everything? No. I can't see it. Unless people would like to watch, observe and correct? This was one game of many, too. He was no one-game-Gary! There are players who will always surpass Gerrard in certain, specific categories, but he is (in my opinion) unsurpassed in being the greatest all-round player I've ever seen. Some people still joke that, somewhat like a reverse of the fatuous Beatles joke, Gerrard is our best Keeper, too. I know it's a joke, but I don't find it that hard to believe! Peace my Mancunian/Salfordian brethren!
Spot on CCC. Even now he has the best passing range in the PL - and quite possibly Europe. This season his passing has been phenomenal. He can whip a dead ball in better than anyone else in the PL too, anyone that disagrees with those statements needs to watch more carefully. He has pin point accuracy 95% of the time. That's why he is so suited to his new role - especially as we're so fast on the counter, his passing can literally take a whole team out, and when you have players like Suarez to aim at all the better. I agree that he's not the best player in any particular position - but all round player, you're hard pushed to find anyone better over the years.
I think I would respect those opinions more if this all wasn't being pushed down our throats on the verge of Liverpool winning the prem title. Where were these claims about him being the best premier league player in the last 14 years? No disrespect but in terms of all round play you could include Keane, Viera, Drogba and even Beckham. What about longevity? All round play is fine, but there are plenty of better players who have performed and DIRECTLY influenced their team winning the Prem title over several seasons. THAT imo dictates the best Prem League player bcos of the influence they've had in their team's successes IN the league over a sustained period of time.
He is not even in the top 10 best players to have played in the premiership. To put him in front of Ronaldo is just farcical. I can understand the ******ed scousers idolising him on the brink of possibly winning that first title (may be!!) but he is not even the best player to have played for them. I can think of Owen and Torres (the scouser version not the chav one!) who were world class at the time. Gerrard has never reached that status and never will. When the ******ed scousers "lose" the title, he will back to his true status...
It's nonsense of course and typical of the Mail, who are best players will always come down to the fans of a particular team but people laughing at the fact that he is mentioned as one of the best are talking nonsense, as a player he is one of the best ever. Lists will vary but to dissmiss him is silly.
Yeh I'd agree with all of that But because this is about the premier league, other factors need to be taken into account as it's specific to the competition. It would be like me saying George Best (also one of the best players ever) was the greatest World Cup player ever. Despite his greatness there's an element of insult in that statement to those that have truly performed on the international stage. Likewise with Gerrard imo re: the prem.
There's no way people would agree on a list it would just be top heavy with players that play in the team that they support, some of the players put ahead of him are laughable and some are up for debate.
On this issue though there are some clear standout players ahead of him being named by posters regardless of who they support. I haven't seen anyone on this thread post ONE player. They've posted a host of players all from a variety of teams so imo the bias thing doesn't apply. Gerrard in terms of the premier league's best player is far down the list, even if the list is debatable.
Geordie fan in peace. I honestly think if you look at the life of the premier league, the quality performed every season and on a consistant basis, with trophies the best player ever has to be Giggs surely. In them early years he was breathtaking. He has been a model professional on the pitch and kept his form and shape till this day.
