Modest Matt Fryatt cannot quite believe he has helped fire Hull to an FA Cup Final - and admits it just is not the sort of thing that happens to him. please log in to view this image In fact Fryatt says, while watching the first half of todayâs FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, he was having flashbacks to Hullâs horror show against Barnsley at the tail end of last season when the East Riding outfit nearly blew promotion to the Premier League. âBarnsley were fighting for their lives and we just needed a point to go up and we all just froze on that day,â recalled Fryatt, âWe had massive support that day just as we did today and that first half was like Barnsley on a bigger scale.â âThe dressing room was flat at half-time because we were struggling and we were thinking, âwhat are we going to do about itâ.â âFortunately the substitutions have paid off and we managed to turn it round.â Fryatt was one of those half-time changes and wasted no time in making his presence felt. The former Walsall and Leicester City man struck within four minutes of taking to the field to return parity to proceedings and from there Hull never looked back. The goal was Fryattâs fourth in the competition and he joked afterwards that credit must go to his manager for bringing him on. âIt worked out well didnât it? The perfect substitutionâ said Fryatt with a smile. âSone Aluko made a big difference and Stephen Quinn got a goal too so the subs made a good contribution all around.â Fryattâs second half display was a clear contributing factor in Hull getting through to the FA Cup Final on 17 May. But the striker says it has not yet dawned on him the role he has played in Hull making the first cup final in their history. âI canât believe Iâm in a Cup final,â he told WembleyStadium.com, âTo come on and it all change is a relief but Iâm also thinking, âthis shouldnât really happen to meâ.â âTo play in a stadium like this, to score a goal, to win and get to a final is the stuff you dream about. Itâs a bit cheesy but I didnât think it would happen to me.â http://www.thefa.com/news/the-fa-cup/2014/apr/matty-fryatt-hull-fa-cup#kII1lmiGDGC3TI7G.99
Well Matty, imo you should have started the game. Your the best player we have in the 6 yard box and I hope you get a new contract offered and you accept it. Must admit, i've not always been your greatest fan but you have proved quite a few lads wrong since you came back from injury.
He looks sharper than he did before his injury. He used to drive me mad when he got in behind the defence and failed to get a proper shot off. Now he's much more agile, he just skipped round the keeper yesterday (I know he was offside but still indicative of his skill) his finishes recently have been perfectly timed, he isn't taking that extra touch or hesitating. Great to see.
Matty should be very proud, its exactly people like you that can help the club lift the cup. One more big performance and help us topple Arsenal please.
You're welcome lads You can thank NP later too In all seriousness, congratulations on your win yesterday and reaching the FA Cup final
Could not agree more. Couple of years ago, he always seemed to want one or two touches more than necessary so that by the time he was finally ready to shoot at least two defenders had closed him down. Now though he seems much more predatory and sharper. As soon as I saw Fryatt and Aluko kick off the 2nd half, I knew we were gonna get at least a couple of goals.
Cheers mate. congrats on your promotion. Do you expect NP to be coming back in for Matty , I for one was slating him last two seasons but as has ben said , he's come back a better player.
I think playing as a lone striker under Barmby and having to work hard on all aspects of his game is what has really improved him. This season is the first we've really seen of him since.
As John Ex Aberdeen alludes to, it's probably because he trains day-in, day-out, with a higher class of player now that we're in the top flight; his game was bound to develop. Very happy for him.
He's always had the ability, he's just getting better service from better players around him. He does look much leaner and more agile.
I absolutely love the bloke. He is exactly what you want from a footballer, he gets his head down and gets involved. Probably not quite got all the attributes to start every week in the premier league but I am happy he has had chance to live his dreams and get a chance to play in the cup final. Let's hope he bags the winner in the final.
Think he will get a new contract. He fits in, he plays in the cup games and he puts it in the onion bag, Bruce recognises the great usefulness of this.
I was so happy when we didn't sell him in January, as I thought he still had a good part to play for us. I'm glad he's proved me right.
The problem we'll have is, although he has been a good player for us & has looked good this season in the few games he's played. If Hull City as a club want to move forward then they'll be looking to bring in better players. Having said that, he could be like Ash & really make the step up & be a real PL player. He could be our version of Rickie Lambert.
Matty is exactly the type of player the FA cup is all about. In fact Hull City are exactly the type of team the FA cup is all about. They seem such a nice bunch of lads who all obviously get on and work hard for each other and the manager. Maybe not the best footballing team out there but it's not always about that.
