A mate had paid £9 return from London to Hull but missed the train from London and panicked and paid about £90 at a machine for the next train. A week or two later I just missed a train from London to Sheffield and took my ticket to the ticket office and gave a pleading look and she stamped the ticket and wrote on it I could get the next train for no extra charge.
I'd booked a few train tickets for London to Hull return in advance and one time I picked up the tickets for a fortnight later by mistake. Luckily the ticket collectors didn't notice either way and I used the earlier tickets for the later journey and the ticket collectors didn't notice then either - but it was a nervous time!
