Not too shabby for a centre-half, eh?

He had a bad start (just like everyone we ever signed from Wimbledon) but he definitely improved and when he was on form he was outstanding, as opposed to an off day when he was usually just standing!

I confess to nearly doing a Tash when that goal went in.

I remember when we were linked to Hristo Stoitchlov (spelling) in 1996 - proper drool! Think I would have produced more than Tash could ever have dreamt of producing if this had come off!

The problem is that if we had managed to get any of these players it would have been for the money not the club. Two names who would probably have been on this list if we had just missed out on getting them would have been Micheal Owen and Patrick Kluivert. I remember feeling really excited about both of these signings but neither did much. I'm sure there are others I've missed too.

Quite possibly. You can never be sure if a player is a good 'fit' in a team or club, and the same is true of a manager. Everyone was devastated by KK's sudden departure, but Dalgleish and then Gullit appeared to be good replacements. How wrong…

Going back in time, Alan Hansen was close to signing for us shortly before joining Liverpool in 1977. Would it have been career-ruining, a springboard to greater success elsewhere, or more than a decade of success as our captain? Who knows, but somehow I doubt the latter.

Not sure you can compare Owen and Kluivert - thought Kluivert did ten times better than Owen. Kluivert in my opinion wasn't given the chance.
