Mamadou Sakho is adamant Liverpool deserve to be top of the Premier League and is ready for 'D-day' against title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Liverpool welcome City to Anfield at the weekend with a four-point cushion over their opponents, but Manuel Pellegrini's side hold two games in hand.

The outcome of the game could play a decisive role in the destination of the title, with Liverpool on a run of nine successive wins as the club try to become champions for the first time since 1990.

Sakho, whose start in Sunday's 2-1 win at West Ham was his first since late December following a leg injury, underlined the importance of the City game and is looking forward to the contest.

"Of course this could be the biggest match Liverpool have played in 24 years," Sakho is quoted by several newspapers.

"You win three points but it's worth a lot more. It is a match that will place the winner in the best position to win the title.

"I hope we win. In any case we are ready for combat. We play at home and have our fans behind us. We will give everything.

"Ever since I arrived at the club, I said it. I told my team-mates that we are capable of winning the title.

"We have the quality and we just have to believe it. And - voila! - as the season progressed we saw Liverpool grow in strength playing such beautiful football.

"We've not stolen the position where we are today. We deserve to be where we are. We are confident about facing their strikers. City score a lot of goals but so do we.

"It will be two beautiful attacks against two strong defences. It's a top match pitting two top teams against each other fighting for the title.

"I have not spoken a lot about matches before we play them. We will see on D-day who is better prepared to take the points.

"The last time Liverpool won the title I was four months old and now I am 24 - I had just been born. Honestly, we will give everything until the last second of the last match."

Sakho joined Liverpool from Paris St Germain last summer and the French defender has praised the influence of manager Brendan Rodgers.

He added: "Rodgers manages to get the maximum out of every player. It's hugely important and not every coach has that charisma.

"He must keep all the players interested and each time he calls up a player they respond with a performance. Like I did at West Ham.

"It's been four months and I haven't played with injury. I had the chance to express myself, and I was there. I felt like a lion before the match. It had been four months and I was hungry to come back strongly."

I like Sakho in that he is unnervingly rapid in his closing down of the opposition when they have the ball (unlike skrtel/Agger who have a bad tendency of backing off and giving space), but obviously the draw back is (like earlier in the season) if he mistimes it or is skinned (or slips up!) then the opposition is through on goal

I look at it this way, if Sakho played for any other team you would be confident in our attack getting at him and putting him under pressure. He dosnt look the best defender at times, struggles with his passing, and looks a defender who will concede a lot of free kicks when he goes into a tackle...

I will say that he is quick, and reads a pass well from the opposition, but im not totally behind him as a defender yet... I hope he has the game of his life on Sunday, if he's playing that is, and that I can say he has come of age as a Premiership Defender...

We are going to need everyone on form <ok>

Good rallying cry from Sakho I've got to say. The guys a beast and is obviously full of belief, he must be impressed by the progress we've made in the last year and he knows now like we all do that at our best we can beat anybody

"Honestly, we will give everything until the last second of the last match". Top, top thing to say.

I disagree. I think his long legs and frame make him look ungainly or like the next Djimi. He is is deceptively graceful and has good balance and again doesn't look like it but very accomplished passer. If I was the opposition, I would love to target Agger. He is easily skinned and has no recovery speed. Agger can be bullied too. I can't remember who (think it was Bony at Swansea) but he was pulled last month because he couldn't handle the physicality in that game.

My only gripe with him, is that he falls over every time he passes.

Sahko is a ****ing beast and I bet his cock is like an anaconda. Good in the air, good passer of the ball, amazing positioning and decent across the ground. Out of every player we have, I feel as if Sahko has the most potential to be "world-class".

I feel as though I can't truly join this discussion as I don't really know enough about his strengths and weaknesses to make an informed comment. But from what I've seen my gut tells me "give him his chance against City". He's not slow and he can jump and he tries to be careful with his passes. So, give him his opportunity.

What we do know is he probably has a cock like an anaconda <ok>

I think the thing with Sakho is that we need to see how he copes with the pace of the Prem on a long tem basis. He's looked good so far but definitely he will have sterner tests to come. He certainly sounds confident anyway which is a good thing (plus Tobes doesn't rate him so he's probably going to be pretty damn decent :)).

  14. We're talking about Sakho, not Toure <ok>

PS...can't quite believe you question his passing, he never misses his target!

I think (and hope!) Sakho and Skrtel will start this game as our CB pairing. I really don't want BR to try to crowbar Agger into the team, as he's just come back from a knock, Sakho did well in the last game and we dont want the 3 CB formation brought back as that was a debacle (although I'm sure it would well against some teams, City isn't one of them!) <ok>

Sakho has potential to become world class. Fantastic all around ability - physical strength, technical, intelligent.

He is the future of our defence, and is a future leader of this team. Hasn't put a foot wrong since he joined and it's shame he's been out injured for a while. What I love about him is that he's proactive - he reads danger and gets to the ball quickly. I criticised the likes of Agger and Skrtel this season (Skrtel was immense on Sunday btw) for being too reactive.

Was made up when we signed him <ok>

i might be on my own here but i always felt the future of our cb's was going to be Sakho and Agger, but Agger is just not forceful enough half the time, last time i remember was when he made torres hide in his little shell, sadly since then don't remember much good.

have to admit Skrtl has made me changed my mind about him, didn't see a future for him at one point when br came in, but weirdly he has adapted better to the style and how we should be than agger who is technically better on the ball.

so is Sakho and Skrtel our future cb's or another throw in like iLlori or someone else?
